Medjool dates...Those things are little mighty power pods. Sprinkle a little salt in the bag with 'em.

When I was in high school I had a summer job working in the orchards. Mornings were moving sprinkler pipes. After lunch, I grabbed a machete and cut suckers of the trunks. These were almonds and prunes. Let me tell you: you will never in your life taste a more delicious fruit than a fresh prune off the tree. Of course, you really can't eat more than two or three.

Prunes are one of those foods that works great in moderation, and do just the opposite if you eat too many of them. I always apportion what I know is my limit (6-8), then eat slowly and savor the flavor as I leaned to do long ago.

Can't say they're any good for energy though. No food I've tried yet (pasta, flap jacks, beans, energy drinks, potatoes, etc.) does a better job for longer than good ol' fashioned rice.

I know a guy that is a very strong rider and when on the bike he lives on organic dried mangos from Costco

I love the mangos too; but, I find dried fruit harder to digest and I feel like it slows me down so I don't eat it while riding. I'll do Fig Newtons, but that's about it. If my body is working hard to digest something it is stealing energy from pedaling so I won't do it..

Good ol' trail mix without the M&M's. Works great for me. Only use on rides over 50 miles.

Trail mix is great but it may take some experimentation to get the right balance of carbs to fats. It also very expensive unless you buy in bulk and mix your own. Of course, you can always make your own but then there that initial equipment cost and prep time. Its like making coffee: it definitely worth grinding your own beans but the scant benefit to your own roasting is not worth it for me.
