Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rack for Carbon Fiber Bikes

I have recently purchased a Specialized Roubaix Carbon Comp. I am looking for recommendations for a top quality hitch mounted bike rack that is safe for my new frame. I am looking at the Softride but don't know if it is carbon fiber safe/compatible. Your input is greatly appreciated!

I've used a $20 rack for my carbon frame for around 10 years. If it's safe for any frame, it's safe for a carbon frame. Nothing special about carbon when it comes to a rack.

How safe would your bike be if you really had to worry if a rack would damage it?

You could go with the type that your wheels sit in:

Thanks. This looks like a great, if not an expensive option. Due to the shape of the top tube on the Roubaix, my Bauer rack won't work, and many manufacturers have warnings about the use of certain of their products with composite bikes. I appreciate your constructive input.

I just asked this question last week. The bottom line was the fact that it's carbon is meaningless when it comes to a rack. If you feel the need, just pad the tube before you put the bike on the rack. I bought a brandy new Saris Bones 3 on ebay for $90. My 5500 will ride in it along with my kids $30 Walmart specials.

I've been using a Yakima King Pin 2 for my carbon bike for around a year now. No problems. Have hauled ot many places (and my buddy's CF bike as well).

It really doesn't matter. Your CF bike is neither especially special or fragile, just get something that works.
