Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Since the beginning of the year, I have "flipped" the stem on 5 out of 7 of my road bikes. I like the position, it is not uncomfortable and of course the bikes look "much" cooler . . .

I am a clyde at 285 down from 302 three weeks ago. Because of my size I had to have the stem all the way up for comfort. I just flipped it two days ago to see if losing a few pounds helped in anyway because I am really starting to feel good on the bike. I have left it flipped because I really like the way the bike feels with the stem flipped down.

Suddenly guys are flipping stems, which makes the stem almost parallel with the gound.

When did they ever start pointing up, anyways?

My bike is 17 years old, a Trek 1200, and the stem was always straight out? Why did companies start using stems that were at an upward angle?

Guys seem to think they are geniuses for having a stem that is straight out nowadays. Welcome back to the 90's!!

I flipped my stem for the sake of flipping it. Instead of my shoulders and back hurting now, its my wrists, which isn't nearly as bad. Flipping it seems to be alot more comfortable.

Maybe the pain in your wrists are just distracting you from the pain in your back and shoulders. I've never heard of anyone who lowered their stem and saw an improvment in back pain. It seems counter intuitive. Maybe your cool new look is providing a placebo effect

It's not the dirt that is making that second pic so wrong.

It's the fact that you didn't line your crank arms with your frame. You did it right in your first pic...What a loser... Take away 5 cool guy points...you might be able to gain them back tomorrow, but today is shot...

Bikes: highly modified specialized crossroads and GT hybrid (really a [formerly] 12-speed bmx cruiser, made before 'hybrid' took on its current meaning), as yet unmodified redline 925, couple of other projects

Because you can raise the stem higher on the old bike.

+1 - Quill stems allowed a ton of super easy height adjustment. Also a ton of time swapping bars/setups, or stems. Cut steerer tubes limit height adjustments. Flipping angled stems makes more height options available.

Personally I liked the old quill stems, but I think threadless headsets are the bee's knees (set it and forget it).

This seems to happen alot. I have heard people speculate, but still not sure why this is true. So many people (including me) flipped at first for looks and found it is more comfy somehow. One of my theories is cause then the upper arms are more vertical, so easier to support weight, but not sure if the change is enough to make this the real reason....

Subtract more cool guy points due to cross chaining and excessive computer wire wrap around right fork blade .

You'd look cooler if your saddle wasn't jacked forward the way it is.

Substract even more cool guy points due to wheels improperly aligned (both valves must be vertical and at the bottom).
BTW, I can't flip my stem. It's a quill type 3ttt.

I noticed there are some fingerprints underneath the bottom bracket. Subtract points for that. Get some polish.
