Boxing a bike for shipping

Hey all,

I have a question regarding boxing a bike for shipment. I need to fedex my bike very early tomorrow, but while packing it tonight I realized I didn't have the plastic caps that sit in the hub to protect the wheels from pressure that may befall them in the shipping process. I've always used these little pieces before, and didn't realize that I must have thrown them out. All the bike shops in the area are closed, so there's no chance of me getting any tonight. How risky is it to ship the wheelset without these small pieces of protection?

Thanks!!!!
-Aaron

its the block to keep the forks front or rear from getting crushed too narrow,
that you Really need.

more cardboard can cover the bare axle end,

And, roll up a few tubes of more cardboard,
and tie them in as cross braces to keep the sides of the box apart .

What u can do is to get polystyrene blocks from a TV set box or anything large u have moving in your house, basically you stick the rear end and the fork in those blocks, and that;s it. more protected than with a hub or anytihng else.

Good luck.

A couple of 3" squares of thin plywood drilled partially through with a 1/2" bit will act as axle end protectors and carboard tubes rolled up and trimmed to length can be used as dropout braces.
