Trek 3700 vs Specialized Hardrock
BMX for many years and decided to give MTB a try. As a starter, should I go with the standard Specialized Hardrock or the Trek 3700?
The 3700 is cheaper so if all components are the same and frame geometry and weight are nearly identical, please do me the favor of informing me so that I can save a hundred and buy the Trek 3700 and use the left over money for small upgrades and tubes.
Thanks to all who reply.

I like Trek's but would suggest a 4500 vs. the Hardrock. The difference between Trek and Specialized is mostly paint. They do fit slightly different and have modestly different spec's at the lower and even mid price points but at the end of the day the emotion of liking a given bike by how it feels when you ride at and even includes the paint job trumps the miniscule differences between the bikes you mention.
You don't have to buy new. If you want a good bike buy a 1 year old higher end bike off Craigslist or Ebay that is almost unridden. Many buy a 1 grand bike and then don't ride them.

You're gonna have two entry level hardtails. I like the Hardrock,I had a few and they've been great bikes after you get rid of the crappy fork. One of my bikes I ride now is a '09 HR,I ve changed the stem, bars, seatpost and fork. The rest of the components work fine if you keep them tuned up. The wheels need a little tweaking every now and then if you're not "butter" in the rough stuff. It's gonna be about the same with the Trek. Ride both and get the one that feels right to you........................and learn to use the search function.
