Singlespeed mountain bike thread or forum?
Hi All. It looks to me like most, if not all, of the singlespeed talk here is road-oriented. Is there singlespeed mountain bike thread or forum here somewhere? Thanks!

Funny this thread popped up. I've been interested in a SS MTB lately and don't really know where to go to learn.

I have nothing to add except that I've been watching Danny Macaskill vids and now I want a mountain bike.

For most of the last decade I've been riding a Merlin XLM converted to singlespeed. That bike was originally built over 20 years ago so it's 26" obviously. :-) About six months ago I bought a stock Cannondale Trail SL 29er, which is now my go-to mountain bike. Aside from the obvious aluminum rather than titanium, the predominant differences are that the Cannondale is fully rigid and it's a 29er. I have to say with the 29" wheels I'm not really missing the front suspension at all.

My do anything and go anywhere single speed Kona mountain bike. Lucked out on a magic gear and with a 1/8" chain, there has not been any (chain stretch) issue yet.

Sold it to recoup funds for fatbike. I did love it, but it was really heavy and it was limited to one unpopular tire size.
Fatbike lets me have just about any wheel size and not screw up the geo or BB drop outside of standard 26/27.5
26x4-5", 27.5x2.8-4", 29x2-3", all with the same familiar bike (that weighs 10lbs less than the surly)
Also drops don't work so well for my riding style on trails, and hydros are the cats pajingles. Obviously those are just things I could've changed on the surly no problem, but since I also got it on year end warehouse clearance sale plus the shop discount, it ended up actually costing me less than the surly did for a huge upgrade

Lately I have been into riding singletrack on a singlespeed with coaster brake and no hand brakes. The coaster brake increases the number of white knuckle moments.

It is the best XC fork that I have ridden. It keeps the tire in contact with the ground better than any other fork I have owned or ridden. I have taken it on some pretty rough trails, too. Quite a while ago I posted a video of one of my favorite trails that you liked, and that is a rough trail for a XC bike. In other words, I really like it!

However the Chain stays seem a little long (445) compared to other bikes (425) I'm looking at. I really want a bike with a playful front end. What are your thoughts on it?
