I've put ~ 1,000 miles on our three road bikes with this setup.

My brother has a lot of riding experience also and immediately liked it, no numb hands or discomfort.

It may look different than what some are used to, but it works great.

In my thinking, the correct solution is a way longer top tube and a way shorter stem. That would put your hands in the best place for steering and stability and still give you room to climb while standing. It would also help with toe overlap on small frames. But it would add weight and look unconventional so it would never be accepted by the Velominati.
I think the issue you would run into this is incredibly twitchy, dangerous steering. On a motorcycle, there is significant inertia and centripetal force to overcome just to get the front wheel to turn. This is not really present in any serious degree on a bicycle. That is one of the main reasons why hands are placed out in front of the steering axis...it forces you to make larger movements to create the same change in steering.

It's great you're having fun, that's the point, and if riding a crappy barnacle covered bike with wonky bars brings you joy then more power to you.

Why you feel the incessant need to convince others of your setup is something different all together, and probably why you catch so much flak.

My bikes have my hands positioned in line with the steering axis. No issues whatsoever because my bars are wide. Lots of input required.

In the never ending search for a more aero position, bars became narrower and narrower over the decades. That made steering twitchy as hell. In order to "Fix" the problem stems were lengthened to add the increased sweep that you accurately describe. Then the new problem was a too long top tube, which was easily fixed. So actually the long stem and short top tubes are two "Wrongs" that put a band-aid on the issue, not remedy it.

On a motorcycle, there is significant inertia and centripetal force to overcome just to get the front wheel to turn. This is not really present in any serious degree on a bicycle.
This is not true on high performance motorcycles. The rake, offset, and trail geometry is so twitchy it can violently rip the bars from a riders grip. That's why we see very stiff (or progressive) hydraulic steering dampers on sport and race bikes.

You gotta get that salt, man! Especially on a long ride on the flopmaster 5000 you lose a lot of sodium.

And now is it a single speed or Fixed gear bike, NO. I call Trolling, this thread was dead 7 months ago and you resurrected it just to troll your your idea of a "wonderful" handlebar shape. I think the bars are too narrow for you and your friend and your elbows are locked up trying to hold onto a set of cheap bars. People have been riding bikes for years and have tried many different shape and sizes, and while you think yours are new, they look uncomfortable and cheesy and would have been or were let go by the wayside as not only uncomfortable but ergonomically incorrect.

I don't think he's a troll. I think he's trying really hard to convince himself his bass-ackward handlebar is a good idea, probably sub-consciously. It's a manifestation of cognitive dissonance. Many of us have experienced this at some point. Here's how cognitive dissonance works:

- You make a purchase (or another impactful decision of some sort).

- After it's too late to reverse the purchase or decision, you find out it was not a good choice. You experience buyer's remorse.

- You can't just admit you were unwise, accept the loss of time and money, and move on. This is because we want to be right; our pride makes us averse to "eating crow."

- In an attempt to resolve the discrepancy between the objective fact that you chose unwisely and your need to be right, you insist that you actually like your decision. You try to convince others it was a good idea. You do everything you can to appear to be happy with your choice.

If pcf can convince enough people his handlebar setup is comfortable, efficient, or at least not totally jack-assey looking, he can feel good about it. I think he wants very much to believe it's a good idea, and he does believe that on a conscious level. If he did some deep, honest soul-searching, I think he'd recognize it's stupid. Admitting that is not an easy thing to do, especially for a 60 year old who's been riding for decades and therefore has a lot of face to save in matters such as this.

That's what I think, anyway.

If I'm right, then the more we tell him his bar sucks, the harder he'll try to convince us otherwise. He has a psychological need to do so.

On another note, the thread still calls to my mind scenes from Monty Python (think of the Ministry of Silly Walks), keystone cops, or The Three Stooges. Accompaniment from lots of slide whistles and kazoos, or whatever it is they play on Benny Hill's show.

How can crazy people who restrict themselves to one gear, have the hide to talk about whether a handlebar setup is acceptable or not?

So the basic idea was to have a more upright ride on a road bike. Is that criminal for the forum? No. Or? OK, it's not.

How can you do it on a road frame? Short stem and have it 4" higher somehow. How will it look? Pretty ****ty.

So that setup moves the handles closer, but not higher and that's what you don't like. I don't too. It looks cramped and I believe it is.

But... Those guys are no fools, so why? I know why: because it is VERY comfortable on hands. But elbows are locked... And that's what we don't like.
