Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

All my panic purchases of tires, tubes, chains, and cables are en route now. After I ordered 2 new 10sp KMC chains (I have 3 10 sp bikes), I realized I still have one in the box. And with the extra 8sp chain I already had after putting the other new one on the C'dale, and the 11 sp chain that's in the mail, I'll have one spare chain for each bike. And 3 pair of spare tires. I already have spare disk pads for the Canyon. I think that should do me for a year, with luck.

I thought that all of the Shimano 105/Ultegra did, too, now. I didn't realize that they differed regionally.

I think that's a recent development. Maybe this chain was old stock.

I'm thinking of saying screw it and doing a short ride today with double bibs to mitigate the pain. I'm getting tired of waiting to feel better. I chickened out last night.

Ditto. I've started carrying a few links of chain as well just in case something goes really wrong and a few links get twisted.

Probably most necessary on my track bike since my chain length is fixed. One additional link and the axle is off the back of the track ends, one less and the tire fouls the chainstays. The chances of a chain failure are pretty low, but you never know...

Oh, and I did end up picking up a Crank Brothers M20. It was a nice little surprise to see a dedicated spot for a quick link inside the compartment with the bacon strips

FWIW, this also came just bagged, not in retail packing, so maybe it was intended to be OEM.

Actually pants are not too bad. I can get by with 34 inch length Dockers and wear them slightly low. Bigger problem are shirts, as I have a pencil neck and long arms. Good luck finding 14 1/2 inch neck and 34-35 sleeve. Cannot be found. I usually compromise and get 15 inch neck and 35 length, which is a little loose in the neck, but even this size is tough.

That's what I was thinking. The half-dozen shimano chains I have all come with the stupid hollow break-off pin thing and not a quick-link. I don't remove chains for cleaning so a non-issue for me.

I have somewhat longish arms and, even before losing weight, the torsos on button-down shirts were just ridiculously poncho-like. Thankfully, slim-fit shirts have become more common, not that I have much reason to even get out of pajamas on any given day (thanks, pandemic!),

I have to at least wear a decent shirt, because of Zoom meetings, and given the dogs' predilection for wnting to go out when nobody else is in the living room and I'm on a Zoom call, pants as well.

You would think that dogs would be more understanding of a person's desire to not wear pants.

In addition to long arms, I also have a thick neck. Imagine what shirt companies expect someone who wears a 17 1/2 - 35 shirt to be built like. So if I buy a shirt to fit in the neck and sleeves, I get a sail. If I buy one that fits the torso, I can't button the neck and I have to roll the sleeves.

Luckily, my job NEVER requires a tie, so I never button the neck of my shirts, and I prefer rolled up sleeves anyway.

I built up a Cannondale 3.0 frame like GeneJockey's blue one with Superbe Pro a long time ago. Then put some Campy ergo levers and deraileurs on it (8 speed). Now you got me thinking about putting the Suntour group back on. I loved the sound of the click shifts resonating in the huge aluminum downtube.

Yeah, that was what I noticed first when I put the shifters back on the bosses - the clicks are LOUD. They're easy to hear on the road, probably for everyone around you, too. I had fun on Sunday's ride, passing people, then reaching down and *CLICK*....

The more I look at vintage bikes, the more it seems to me that most of the 'lightweight racing bikes' from major companies came with a mixed bag of components, instead of a single manufacturer. Often the shifting was all one group, and the brakes another. This seems to have changed in the 90s, but my Cannondale came with a Suntour front derailleur, even though everything else was RX100.

Every time I see a posting about Abus helmets, I somehow read it as "Airbus" in my brain and get confused about planes.
