TRADED TO NLERNER

Those of you who've been around long enough probably have seen this bike more than a few times. @WGB picked it up as Mystery Meat a few years ago, it then wound up with @bertinjim, and I got it and proceeded to build it as a backdated porteur style build as Le Porteur de Viande Mystère: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...e-mystere.html. This post and the ones referenced in that thread provide a lot more information as to the lack of provenance and odd serial number on this bike, which somewhat points to a late 1960's PX10, but isn't 100% concrete.

This said, as much as I would like to finish it, I've got way too many bikes headed my way right now, and not enough space. I decided this one had to go on the chopping block as it's looking as if it'll just be too small for me. I may not be an old fogie yet, but my back is telling me that I can't hack the same amount of drop I could ten years ago.

Since almost everything on this bike (save for the stem) was either acquired in a trade or given to me, I will only do trades. I have no idea what I want, except that I am nosing around looking for any 58-61cm (seattube) frames from BITD with Cyclo Standard derailer mounts built into the frame - even though that's probably above the trade level of this bike. I'm flexible on this and wouldn't mind trading without the wheels or bars.

Bike was resprayed at one point and it's a nice paint job indeed. Very good lugwork that's actually better than my 1961 Schwinn Paramount in most spots (most...there's still a few rough spots, but the Nervex Pros have been thinned quite nicely). Stronglight headset, TA Professional 3-arm crankset, Phil fully adjustable BB with French rings, Pivo stem (I may want to keep this), unmarked steel porteur bars, and unknown brake levers that will probably kill someone, but look super cool. Sakae seatpost and some no-name leather saddle. Rims are Weinmann 700C with Maillard hubs, but rear rim is designed for tandem spokes, and front isn't. The pics have it mocked up with a pair of Wald 27" fenders from @pastorbobnlnh which I can either include or not - they look great, but we all know they're just steel Walds.

Very nice work you did and it looks cool. Also, still some mystery left to solve to see what exactly it's back story might be.

The lack of a headbadge would drive me a bit nuts but this bike calls for a home brewed one since this looks like a pub bike.

The most valuable piece on that bike may be that longish French stem; those can be hard to source.

I have more projects than I need but I'm moderately interested.

How uncertain are you that this is a late 60s PX 10?

I have what is likely an equivalent quality French bike (a Gitane TdF with good original paint) that fits you better than it does me. I'm fence sitting on whether I need an additional project though . . .

Neat thread. Is that a 26.0 seatpost? A bike that has made its rounds like this via bikeforums members and clearly had an original owner who knew and loved bikes deserves a good home.

It originally measured 26.0, but I discovered that the left seatlug ear had been mildly tweaked and it is, indeed, 26.4. From the build thread:

I don't think there's any reason to doubt it's a PX10 (except maybe the good lugwork - but the serial number on the bike remains off from other PX10's of the late 1960's, even though the rest of the details match up.

I have a repainted PX10 frame from the 70's that would fit you. I have the original wheels as well. I can send pictures if you're interested.

I have heard that in the mid-60s Peugeot may have restarted their serial numbers, could this possibly explain the odd number?

Another PX isn't quite what I was going for (and if so, I'd trade frame/fork only), but will send a PM with my email.

Three things:

• Bump.
• I really don't have any reason to doubt it's a PX10, but as I've mentioned above, I'm not an expert on them - and given that it stumps the experts a bit, I can't explain the SN myself either.
• If nobody wants to trade for this thing...show me whatever funky French fenders you want to get out of your attic/bike room - I'd like to put it on this.

This thing is still kicking around. Wouldn't be adverse to the idea of trading it for a Moulton MkI/II buildable frameset; with rims would be a plus. I happen to have a modern Sturmey hub in search of a project.

No GUESSING, it's a mid to late 60's maybe 1970 Peugeot PX10 frame. The "tell" on the date is the Simplex forged steel dropouts with the "horn" on the left side. The horn is quite handy to hook your finger around when installing and centering the rear wheel.



All of the other features are Peugeot PX10 including the Stronglight V4 Competition headset. The head badge or lack thereof is no sign of the build year. My 1967 PX10 has a thick aluminum foil head badge. I've seen them with thin aluminum and screwed on head badges from that era too.





With a respray and new decals it will make a nice PX10

It’s definitely cool. I dig the paint. It would be cool to paint the head and seat tubes a contrasting color like forest green or something.
