Actually better riding conditions than the mixture of mud and wet leaves the last time I was on those trails. Only have to wait 5 months until they're clear again.

that's a little bit of heaven right there. I would try singletrack if I could be guaranteed the trail would be that nice, as-in, no rocks or roots

I came across some rocks and roots but not too bad. I had to turn around as I got deeper into the woods the trail was real wet. I didn't want to be out there messing the trail up . I'm planning to get a 650b wheelset and run bigger tires so I can handle some of the rougher single track trails around here.

I don't have gravel like everybody else. This is more or less a fire tower rd a 3 mile climb @ a solid 7-8% slope. Have to ride 10 miles of macadam to get to it. 3 Square Hollow Newburg PA

My buddy on his Surly Disc Trucker, as we rode an organized gravel gravel ride through the hills an hour north of town last Saturday. Here we are riding through private ranch land, cleared for the event.

The road before the 18% climb. Yeah, I had to walk more than half of that grade.

I met this woman in the North Georgia mountains. She had walked the entire Appalachian Trail solo, 2,186 miles and had only 4 miles left when the photo was taken. Today was her last day. Done. Boggles the mind. I didn't know what to say except to acknowledge how special this day was for her.

Her effort was very humbling as I "suffered" through a 60 mile ride with 6200 ft elevation. Below is the Tocoa River Swinging Bridge which is part of the Appalachian Trail.

North Georgia gravel.

Yesterday may have been the last nice day of the year so I got out and did a 2 hour mixed surface ride of 30% paved 70% gravel.

some fields were still being worked for harvest- the 1st pic is a grain truck that had just filled up at a field I passed. There is construction because a massive development is going in. Sad to see since itll be one less local gravel road to ride.

the second pic highlights the dirt I rode a good bit due to all the mud that is tracked onto the gravel roads during harvest. That road is usually loose gravel over hardpack, but it was all dirt due to the last 6 weeks of harvest!

Yes, that huge development project really sucks. Apparently there is another proposal in the works that would again impact the Great Western Trail, which is my main route to get to gravel.

More impact to the Great Western than whats already been bulldozed and leveled alongside it? Hope it isnt more than whats already happening.

I get that DSM is consistently ranked atop places to live and places to work rankings and from that comes inevitable investment and expansion, but dang I wish that expansion was less sprawl based.

i stay off the Great Western when riding from water works to gravel. I take the gravel road that runs alongside the trail starting at Park and a couple miles in it turns to a paved road going west. Cross 63rd and go past the golf course then head south. Head west on county line rd and that leads to r45 and a short bit later that leads to gravel. I zig zag down instreard of using the trail. There are a few good gravel climbs and a few good paved climbs this way.
on my Saturday ride, I saw about a dozen others on various gravel roads down there in just 2 hours, and that's on an end of season day. It's a lot more on nice weekend days.
That whole area is great for gravel- relatively close and good hills.

paved paradise and whatnot.
