Midwest must do rides - 2016

Signed up for my fourth Shoreline West in lower Michigan. It's the ride's 30th anniversary. In twenty years of riding, this is easily in the top five for all facets (logistics, scenery, user-friendliness, affordability, etc.)

If you're a veteran of this ride, you should've received an early bird registration email for 10% off. Registration for everyone else begins on Jan 1. I look forward to the cherry pastries every time I do this ride. Worth every penny!

In southern Wisconsin there's a town called La Grange and it has the John Muir trails. There's about 30 miles of circuit mtb trails. They're really fun if you take the time to go.

Michigan Mountain Mayhem | Can you handle the mayhem?

All three of the Michigan Mountain Mayhem rides are great.

The Spring Classic sells out in 1 or 2 days and registration opens a week from Saturday.

Stop at the County Store at 12 & H. It's a great place to get a sandwich/coffee/beer/bike parts.

Margi Gesick 100! Marji Gesick 100 - 906 Adventure Team 100-miles of the most rugged singletrack you'll find anywhere in the country. Prepare to be challenged by 11,000 feet of vertical gain. You'll experience views you won't soon forget and brutal climbs your legs will feel for days. This is an extremely technical course - be prepared. Our racers abide by the "Self Supported Ethos" which means simply - You are on your own. You are responsible for you. There is no one to save you. We do mark the course but anything can happen - signs fall down, signs get torn down by knuckleheads. We HIGHLY suggest a GPS with mapping capabilities. If you choose to do the race without one, don't blame us when you get lost. It is important to note you cannot win anything. We don't do awards. You can, however, earn something. The coveted belt buckle.

I just signed up for the Dairy Roubaix, a southwest Wisconsin gravel ride. 54 and 107 mile options... https://www.facebook.com/Dairy-Roubaix-195345600553951

Im pretty pumped, it'll be the first year I've ridden this ride (and really, this region's roads)

There's also "Race the Lake" which is 90'ish mile Race/ride around Lake Winnebago. Very organized and numerous stops along the way with free food and potties. Normally about 1500'ish people do the ride at the end of August. Police officers at all the intersections to hold traffic. My favorite ride when I lived in Wisconsin a few years ago.

I rode Race the Lake in 2012. That was the fastest I ever covered a distance of that length. Yeah, lots of drafting. It's fairly flat, but a fun event nonetheless.

Ummm I don't want to start anything as I realize it may look like quite a few people when your there in person but the most they ever had was 1614 in 2012. That's total participants and not just racers. It's usually like a 100 per heat that leave every few minutes. I've done the race in 2010 and 2011. I moved to Oregon in June of 2012 and back to the midwest in 2015 so I wasn't able to race it for those few years. Great race/ride either way.

He's young so maybe 50 some miles on a fatbike won't be an issue but not something I'd want to do it on.

Root River Bluff & Valley Bicycle Tour - July 8-10. 50-68 mi/day. I haven't biked SE MN, but have heard great things. A tad pricey for a three-day event. But it includes a bike jersey if registered by 4-17-16.

Here's an update. My son did the Dairy Roubaix on his fat bike and finished with a pretty respectable time. He got lost a couple of times, but was able to ask a farmer or two how to get back on the route. Everyone at the event was great and very encouraging. We had an awesome time and definitely recommend doing doing this ride.
