Have you tried Wal-Mart or a sports department store? The bike store I went to didn't have that many in stock.I have a old one I bought years ago, still works,I don't see the sense in trading up. Maybe try a Acadamy Sports or Sports Authority in your area. They have all kinds, even Wal-Mart.

Go online. Performance bike or Nashbar. They have great selections and generally have good deals. I almost bought my last helmet from Specialized, but Performance happened to have a sale on a Giro that was the right color that I was looking for.

On-line may not be the best option. Helmets do vary by brand in how they fit heads, which also vary in shape and size. Some brands...and some heads...are oblong or round. There are certain brands of helmets that fit my head just fine and others that feel like my head is caught in a vise. Best to try them on.

As for where to get them, those sold in Helmart have to meet the same safety standards as those sold in bicycle stores. I'd still by mine in a bike shop because more expensive ones offer more fit options, adjustment and ventilation.

+1 ^ The Bell Citi is a fairly inexpensive helmet worth consideration. As long as they fit, they'll do fine.

Yeah I think ima check out the lbs. Do walmart helmets perform as well in crashes as giro's or more expensive ones do on average?

they are probably more expensive at your local lbs probalby because of different options, vents, style/the way it looks, weight?

I like the bell alchera from nashbar. Not to pricey, fairly well ventilated, much more adjustable and better fitting than the last one I got from Walmart. Of course you can get it other places than nashbar, but it was $40 there when I got it and I couldn't find it elsewhere for less.

They all have to meet the same standards so there is no functional difference.

The question nobody asked, and is crucial, is: what do you need the helmet for?

jumpman23j, at this point it would be good to take whatever advice that you have gotten and go buy what you want. Don't look back. Don't even revisit your thread. It is about to devolve into what all helmet questions on this forum devolve into...a helmet war. I predict that it will take 4 pages to resolve and a whole lot of spilled electrons.

For heaven's sake, just walk away! Oh, the humanity!

Get whatever you like that fits and is within your budget. Like cyccommute stated, they all need to pass the same standard.

Arg...do you really want to hijack this thread and go in that direction? Some people want to wear a helmet, some people don't. Both sides have valid points and it comes down to a personal choice.

I've purchased all my helmets online and never had a problem, but I've always stuck with Bell or Giro. I'm sure others have had bad experiences, but mine have all been positive.

OK; maybe I'm just curious. Can't one be curious? I do believe the scientists when they say that helmets don't prevent concussions, but they are still useful to protect your scalp from scratches. And if you use an un-ventilated helmet, then it's fine for rainy weather. Those are some reasons for wearing a helmet. Maybe there are others. I'd like to find out.

Agreed, you're not starting any crap and his specific needs relating to his helmet choice are relevant fer shure.

Lol, this thread got out of hand quickly didn't it? I think I'm going to take the advice given and just go to the LBS and try out different ones until I find the one I like.

I really like Bell's dial adjustment, and I hate the foam pad "adjustment" system. Sticking foam pads inside to make the helmet fit is silly.

I've bought several helmets online, but mainly because I have a big head and most of the "one size fits all" helmets in the department stores don't fit my head. I wait for end-of-season sales. I've bought a couple of Bell Metros for $40 or so now. Before that I had a Bell Citi, which is basically the same helmet.

There's a temptation to get one of those neat ones with watermelons printed on them though...
