Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My brother is a published author, in the fantasy/historical fiction genre. His basic commentary is that you can't make a living as an author unless you write something that will convert to TV/screen, which is why there is a great deal of recipe writing, and why so much that is done today is utterly predictable. Authors lament the lack of originality, and then continue to produce to template to chase success. That is definitely apparent in the stuff he does.

I have long had the concepts for two novels, and I have discussed them with him. He wants to jointly write them, because they are unusual. But his goal is to morph the unusual bits to the commercial model and go for movie right sale. My goal is to write them down to get them out of my head. To date, I haven't agreed to the venture because starting with opposing goals never leads to success.
Writing books was never a way for most people to make money. I'm aware of how 50 Shades started, and on top of that, Twilight is another series that was sold and read a ton before the movies arrived. "Short attention span readership"? Come on, people are reading books. Saying they're reading the "wrong" books doesn't carry much water, any more than the "young'ns are listening to the wrong music".

Things haven't changed as much as people think.

I beg to differ. With music, I find that I like pretty much any genre as long as the artist is actually an artist and not a commercial concubine. I can listen to bluegrass, hip hop, death metal, jazz, etc. as long as it's actually good. Books are similar. There are really quality writers in the young adult genre, but there are lots and lots of crappy ones. There are hack novelists just like there are hack musicians.

In the end, reading books is good, but I don't think it automatically qualifies someone as cultured the same way that someone who listens to a lot of music isn't cultured when said music is trash.

The CAAD 10 is home from the bike doctor. Again.

LBS said they took the BB completely apart this time. They said the was no grease on the BB bearings. They also said that it felt like the BB bearings were not seated completely. So, they put 63.7 pounds of grease in, seated the bearings with the big hamer and put everything back together with an air powered impact wrench. They said the crank is a little stiff now, but should loosen up with a few miles.

That price for <1500g alloy 32mm wheels seems suspect. Most "aero" alloy wheels are over 1600g at least, I wonder where they've cut weight?

Regardless, for that price range I'd be looking at a pair of Ultegra 6800 wheels, they're on sale at Nashbar this weekend. Not as light or aero, but I'd have to imagine they're more durable and will last longer.

The ultegras.. Negligible upgrade from RS10's or sizable? I want to put Conti GP 28mms on 'em so if that changes the recommendation lmk.

Speaking of wine...

@Heathpack and any other people that live in SoCal, have you ever been to Temecula?

My brother is getting married in San Diego in July and my better half and I are going to spend 3 nights in a B&B in Temecula the week before the wedding.

I know it's not Napa or Sonoma, but hopefully there are still some decent vineyards/restaurants there.

I think they aren't THAT much lighter (if you want light for that price, go for the Vuelta Corsa SLRs, I think they're about 1400g), but the Ultegra wheels are definitely way more durable than the RS10s and probably noticeably stiffer as well.

I've had plenty of riding buddies who had RS10s (I guess they're stock on a lot of C-Dales) and upgraded to better wheels like Kysriums ect., don't think any of them were displeased with the results but there's some confirmation bias going on I'm sure.

My Giant came with Kysriums and I've had no problems with them. The CAAD 10 came with Aksiums, those have been trouble free as well.

Very bad day for our boat neighbor, their boat sank at the slip. Talking to the Marina security guard, he had a very long night. Because some other boat a few fingers over exploded and then sank in its slip last night! Mr. H lives for stuff like this, he has got to dinghy over and see the exploded boat before we leave.

There's a lot of professionals that still crash those kind of cars out on closed race tracks with minimal environmental interference.

I imagine (since I haven't gotten behind the wheel of a supercar) that these cars north of 5 and 6 hundred horsepower start to behave the same as the 100-150hp 2 wheel equivalent. While I'm sure they're super exhilarating you're rolling the die every go around.
I had a 10 year old Triumph TR-6 (about 100 bhp) airborne on a public road once in my yute.

Reviews are like - yeah blew up the Corsa SLRs after X mileage. I would definitely be that guy. I think the Ultegras are probably a better 'idea' for me.

Holy.. that is a bad day if I've ever seen one..I like Louis Ck's take on boats. He's like "if you own one, you should have enough $ to buy another 3 without a problem". I think in this case he's right even though it's 'just' an extra 1.

Does boating insurance cover this sort of thing?

Totally believe it. What you lacked in horsepower back then you also lacked in good suspension, good tires, and good safety features. Sometimes a small light car with ok power is way scarier..

It's hard to imagine that the muscle cars that were around when my parents were kids.. that kind of 0-60 and bhp is found on just a standard mid-sized car now. There's a lot of bang for buck for hp now. Some Ohio dealer is doing a 704hp Mustang for $39k. It's a mustang gt with a Rousche package installed onto it. Too much temptation for me; this is why we can't have nice things.

I believe there are. However it's equally close for us to hit up the Central Coast, so that's where we go for wine. Never been to Temecula for wine purposes but I still think it's probably decent. Better than you'll find in Virginia.
