Dr. Gustav Klein, come again?

While perusing Klein bicycles and frames on eBay I notice a bizarre trend. Many of the listings have a sub-heading “Dr. Gustav Klein” as if the individual sellers believe there is some genious Einstein-like designer connected to the provenance of said Klein bike.

I mean, this subheading is being perpetuated by many, many sellers. Now if they wanted to cite the influence of Gary Klein or even “Doctor” Gary Klein then I might appreciate the DNA being a “genuine” Klein.

But this “Dr. Gustav Klein” nonsense is just bizarre.

is it just another hilarious manifestation of uninformed sellers attempting to make their item more impressive?

Kind of like when you read bad Craig’s List ads where they say a bike is equipped with so and so brand of ”peddles” or is “Campagnola” equipped.

My guess is that the brand "Dr Gustav Klein" (a German pharma brand) was already known in the Ebay system and popped up automatically when the sellers were entering their brand name as "Klein". Just hit enter and you're suddenly selling a genuine Dr Gustav Klein bike.

yeah, pretty hilarious I figured it was connected to some other brand, I never knew it was a German Pharma brand.

Just like all the "phoney" and "fake" descriptions that for some reason pops up when you enter "Bidon"\Sporting Goods in the search box..... Has been like this for over two years already....
Something screwed up in the eBay system that must be giving headaches to the sellers.

Herr Doktor also seems to produce professional tools.

EDIT: and deals in radio communication apparatus.

I'm impressed.

Gary is a friend of mine, but I've never called him "Doctor" Here's a couple snaps I have digital copies of. We visited the White House for Christmas one year and attended the tree lighting party. I remember Patti LaBelle sang as did a young girl named Leeann Rimes; I forget the year. The last pic is of a Klein Quantum Pro with full Campy that he sent me for my birthday one year.

Thanks for sharing! Being gifted a Campy equipped Klein would be a life changer, stunning bike !

i remember reading all the great, technical Klein catalog copy back in the day. So it is not hard to imagine that Mr. (Gary) Klein would be a PhD - therefore also a “doctor”

Hey it is a small world. i’m Located in SW Ohio as well!

Great info...

It will be great to see both of you (and your bikes) at Coppi. We could have a Klein category, with a Dr. Gustav section.

I was in Greenville last week....

He's an incredibly smart guy, that's for sure. He thinks on levels I can't even comprehend.

Oddly enough, I was a police officer then, a bike cop to be exact. When the movie "Colors" came out I was forever after known as "Pacman".

And you got RID of it? Looks like the same year as mine, which is still my main ride... 20 years old and I hope it lasts forever.

No I didn't get rid of it, I crashed it hard in a crit and broke the frame and fork. I'm not the kind of friend that says "Hey you remember that great bike you gave me? I crashed it racing and was wondering if you would give me another one." Tacky

I still have some of the components though. I'd say if you avoid running over a pile of bicycles and human bodies at about 35 mph your bike will last a long time

Oooof that sucks but I am sure the good Dr. Gustav would have helped out at least a little? I wouldn't have asked outright for a new frame for free but maybe work out a deal or see if he can't repair it or if you can buy a new one cheaply?

I hope my Klein MTB doesn't break because I am really falling in love with mine and haven't really had a chance to ride it much. Luckily I plan on somewhat babying as much as I can but also want to ride it.

I think we should find Mr. Klein a t-shirt or polo with "Dr. Gustav" on it, and send it to him.
He's a good guy, came out of MIT to make bikes, for criminy sakes.
