Nice

When I had a family of 3 (significant other + his daughter, a pre-teen at the time) we loaded up a large duffel bag and several backpacks and walked to the laundromat. I usually wore my rattiest clothes so I could wash the nice ones. People thought I was homeless.

Pre-Christmas grocery run!

We really don't do anything special in my household, but it's good to have supplies while all the stores are closed. I had a nice run with the trailer, in the dark, stopping at two different stores. The streets are pretty dead around here, and it's cold and clear, making for a pretty ride.

I doubt they own shoes for you to be in; even in cold weather they're in either fuzzy slippers or flip flops.

I generally use the trailer for laundry; with its water resistant bag, I don't have to worry about a light rain on the way home, and without the bag, I could haul more laundry than I own in regular laundry sacks.

-10C, but I've acclimated and it doesn't feel cold. Took the dog for a walk but spent half the time picking burrs out of her face and paws. They must blow along the surface of the snow aggregating into larger clumps at this time of year.

Happy New Year, all.

Happpy New Year to you also!

I've finally gotten acclimated to the cold weather. Good thing, because it looks like it will be around for a while longer. It's been going below zero F every night for more than a week now. My winter coat has been very disappointing, but I finally got the layers right to keep me warm.

For noobs--keep collecting warm garments. I have a big tub of them and I can always find the right combination for just about any type of weather. I also have enough to loan people when I can con them into going on a walk or ride with me!

single digit highs today adn tomorrow but went downtown after work today anyway because DH had an appointment.. walked around some, and slipped into 2 stores I would have skipped otherwise (one selling cupcakes and I bought one!) to warm up a bit as we went.. I was mostly warm enough, but I had added an underlayer under pants after work, not my windproof pants and my legs and nose got cold... the harder part of the below 0F temps- my further clinic had furnace issues on the office side (at least the patients had heat) and a space heater doesn't work so well in a large space like my shared office. today I was at at the local clinic so overly warm because my officemate with reynauds was in and had the thermostat cranked!

Walking

I just walked Tracker the biker dog around the block.
As we reached the point farthest the way from the house
I got a blast of frigid -21 C. wind.😮

Still I am jonesing to get a winter bike.
The grocery store is too far to walk,
I don't want to move the car and
if it just one trip then home again
a grocery trip would be fun and make the winter pass quicker.

Taking away the excuse " I don't have a good enough jacket". Perfect.

What kind of bike do you have? Almost any bike can be ridden in the winter, at least on the nicer days.

Bike

Right now I have an inexpensive Norco hybrid but am going to upgrade.
I prefer to buy or build a winter bike I won't mind banging up a little.
I know me,when it gets too cold I won't be so patient when
locking up or maintaining a bike. My Norco seems to get dinged very easily.
I will get a used mountain bike or a fatty and go from there.

My significant other and I had an all day training...which meant some walking! It was quite brisk when we left, at -10F/-23C, but had warmed up to 10F/-12C for the afternoon walk home. All told, 4 miles of walking for the day...3.8 miles for transportation, and another quick walk around the building to try and wake up!

I find that many winter days are fine for riding on any kind of bike. For example, the last couple weeks have been below 10F degrees, but when it's that cold there's obviously no rain and not even much snow. As long as I'm dressed warmly, cycling is a joy--no more wear and tear on the bike than there would be on a sunny day in June. You really only need a special bike for winter if you want to (or have to) ride on even the sloppy days.

Went on a payment/gravel ride today the weather was in the lower 70s the benefit of living in southern Texas. Hit cattle guards and negotiated around loose cattle and a few friendly barking dogs. Overall a great day to ride.

Dog walks and bus stops. Our cold spell ended and the streets have been slushy and puddly.

I've covered 142 km so far this year on foot, with the second week of January being my biggest week at 63.3 km.

Lots of commute walking because I was attending university for 8 days straight, plus some errand walking, and some running including my first 10K running event.

I don't walk for exercise because of a bad foot.
However I do walk my dog Tracker as far as I can.
Today we will walk to where the car is parked.
I park the car away from the house because it costs less and
I am less tempted to drive it for errands I could walk with Tracker.
Tracker doesn't mind the extra walking.

As far as my car is concerned there is very little parking where I live.
Rather than driving around burning gas I park wherever is available.
Let us say at most a ten block round trip.
Tracker gets walked that far at least.

If my foot is unusually sore I walk him to an abandoned schoolyard
where he can run free. My goal is to move to the country where
Tracker has woods to play in and I can ride a bicycle for errands.
I hope that plan works out.
