Are you a dog?
So, not long ago I was commuting back home from work on a bicycle at about 2200 hours, two young guys about mid 20s driving by me in a car so the passenger guy decided to bark at me, it startle me there for a little. When they stopped at the red light now while I passing them I said "are you a dog?" all i heard was a loud **** you! while riding away" 
I wished I could punch him the face and i am not even a violent guy but today we can't do such things.

Dont take it personal. Mid twenties brains are still not developed. And I think it is getting older for them to developed. 😒

Heh, at least you could understand what they're saying. When motorists holler at me I can rarely comprehend the words. Drivers' Ed should teach proper technique: use the diaphragm to project the voice & turn the head toward the cyclist while passing.

I always imagine that Hollering Motorists are wishing me a nice ride and commenting that I have a cool bike.

It's the strangest thing - it seems that young men between the ages of 16 and 25 all have cars that are powered by drivers and passengers shouting out the windows. Oddly enough, I've also been barked at - enough that it takes me by surprise when I see an actual dog in the window.
At least they didn't throw anything.

It can work the other way too, there is a guy in Perth, Western Australia, who's nick name is Mad Dog. He has mental health issues that sometimes manifest in him riding around furiously on an old 10 speed, with rat trap pedals and bare feet. He'd ride up alongside some unsuspecting motorist stopped in traffic and bark in through their window. He'd then ride off laughing his head off. What is funny is the passengers that hide behind the door pillar and yell at you anonymously. I often point to me ear, shake my head and give the "What?" signal. It seems to aggravate them that their "message" was not understood.

About 8-10 years ago I was shot, almost point-blank from a passing car while commuting home from work in the afternoon on a not-so-busy side road. But it was only a pellet gun I was shot with. It was summertime and I was wearing only a t-shirt. It broke the skin, but didn't penetrate. It was a couple of late-teens males. As they drove on...at pretty much a legal speed...I did happen to get the license plate number, make and model of the car. AND...I was just a block from the town police station so I stopped there to report it. Turns out...the passenger who shot me was already 'acquainted' with the town police. They apprehended him in about 15 minutes. The kid claimed he thought I was one of his high school friends, and was just playing a joke on him. My response: Right! I'm 50 years old, wearing baggy cargo shorts, t-shirt, and black sneakers on a commuter bike and you mistook me for one of your friends? Not buying it. He was charged with a felony and went away to the state Sheriff's Ranch.

I yell back, quite loudly and nasty. It seems to make the passenger crazy. I don't think they have any clue how lame they look leaning out the window screaming at a cyclist they just passed. What's even funnier is watching the driver floor it so I won't catch them at the next light.
I wonder how many of these guys are actually annoying the hell out of the driver.

2200 hrs. to me says it's dark (and probably few others around). Maybe it would have been best to just let it go but since you didn't I hope you were prepared to defend yourself if need be. Sometimes a good unexpected attitude adjustment can really help a young smart-a$$ like that.

In today's world unless somebody threatens you, it's best to ignore and go around and not talk to the person. There are those that will say, "I don't put up with crap like that!". Well, unless you are carrying and really proficient shooting from your bike it's not if but when you get into a confrontation you did not anticipate. It's best to let it go, you never know who state of mind that person is in.
