Why are people’s names being deleted from posts?

Lately I’ve read several posts where the meaning was a bit garbled, and I realized it’s because a person’s name has been omitted. Wondering why this is being done. Is it a new general policy, to protect a member’s privacy?

This is the first I've heard of it. Can you link me to a post where you've seen this?

Oh I know what you're talking about, I've noticed this as well. For some reason when a person is referenced, at least in mobile view it doesn't show their name unless you also underline it.

So @GrainBrain vs [u @GrainBrain

@IBThomas

Welp that didn't work either. Anyway you can see the mention in desktop view just fine. It started doing this before the update.

I've seen it in mobile view as well. Assumed it was a system issue and not a policy.

Looks like a bug. Thanks for the heads up. I'll forward the issue to tech.

Are you sure

I brought this to your attention the day after the major update (26 April 2018, 4 months ago).

For example, I will at-mention myself here: @carleton is the greatest!!

If you quote or edit my text, the "mention" tag will be there, but the text doesn't render properly.

Firefox 59.0.1 on mac OS X 10.13.4.

EDIT: I viewed this post via Safari 11.1, and the behavior is the same. All I see is: " is the greatest!!"
Here is your response on 27 April 2018:

It's been so long, maybe it was fixed and it broke again? At any rate, there's a ticket open at the moment.

@carleton Yeah, it's been awhile. I reported the issue only to find out I already reported it, tech tells me they're working on getting this fixed still. Updated my old report with new information from this thread.

This post: https://www.bikeforums.net/20527022-post376.html mentions Darth Lefty. This post: https://www.bikeforums.net/20530300-post377.html mentions Gugie. When I went to edit the post (thinking I'd muffed something), I saw the correct BBCode for the mention (mentally remove the spaces before/after the brackets):

[ MENTION=339610 ]Darth Lefty[ /MENTION ]
It's just not being displayed. This has been an issue with the mobile skin for quite awhile. I just started noticing it with the main skin/theme. Likely related to the latest update of the forum software.

One more bit of info... In a desktop environment "Default Style" seems busted, but "BikeforumsNG" works ok. Hopefully this helps the devs/admins/powers-that-be narrow down the hunt for the problem.

People should generally only be using BikeforumsNG as the other website versions are unsupported and do not get updated. So long as you BikeforumsNG, you should be good to go.

You do know why this statement is problematic right?

Customer: What soups do you have today?
Waiter: Tomato soup and chicken noodle soup.
Customer: I'll have Tomato soup.
Waiter: We are all out of Tomato soup.

+1... If you've got it, support it properly. If you aren't going to support it, don't pretend you do by putting it in the theme list.

Well, it still doesn't display on mobile, and I doubt it ever will. Nature of the beast. Can't get there from here. Or possibly, don't want to get there from here.

I expect better than this from professionals. I guess I'm the fool, though. I've been hoping embarrassment would be a motivator, but I'm wrong about that, too.

Seems a bit like a captive audience situation. Where would we go, and if we found somewhere, would we be able to take our existing content? Also, as a for-profit business, the number of support people are quite likely fewer than if it was a community-supported open source project.

I might agree. bikeforums might be the biggest thing of its kind, but there are alternatives. (This is not a threat.) The biggest ought to be able to find the resources to make things right after seven months. Commercially run social media companies don't usually leave bugs in place for seven months. Community supported things are smaller than bikeforums, and facebook is bigger, so I don't think size explains a lot.

Our team is still working out this issue. It requires a change to the core of VB and, among other priorities, is not something that can be addressed quickly. We do have plans to fix this and it's not something we have forgotten.

Have you got an estimate or a hopeful date of completion?

At least the site works mostly. We have two channels impacted by the recent FCC 'repacking' order that gives all channels above 38 I think it was to cellphones and emergency services, the public network is suppose to move to a new channel to allow another in it's place and due to backlog in the short-staffed public network's engineering dept. they aren't moved yet so neither signal will come in on my tuner until then as the repacked station just moved and they cancel each other in this area (jam, more or less but the tuner can't see the RF signal at all, unlike analog which produces a clear amount of jamming as noticed when the former public TV signal could not vacate for two weeks for the newly opened and assigned channel a full power station was now also on in the 90s)...

Long story I know but I like Nova and old gameshows alike. I can sit here and use this.
