Older Newbie from NoVa

I’m glad to have found these forums. I’ve always found these older style internet communities a great way to become comfortable with new activities.

At 71 I’ve just started to get back into cycling after a more than half century hiatus. So far its been a slow start. Thanks to my younger friend I’ve had good guidance on bike choice (Cannondale Adventure] and accessories. Also introductions to Virginia’s W&OD Park where I’m able to safely ride. He also has been giving me etiquette lessons which really matter as there was no concept of bike etiquette on Long Island back when I last rode regularly.

Anyhow, I look forward to many years of healthy riding and fun with friends, new and old.

Welcome. I used to live i the Reston and Herndon area and really miss the W&OD. One of my favorite group rides was out to Purcerville weekend mornings for pancakes.

From the W&OD take the Custis Trail downhill a few miles into Ballston, turn right at the Potomac and follow the GW Memorial Trail to Reagan National Airport, then turn right on the Anderson Bike Trail at Four Mile Run and follow it to Shirlington and the beginning of the W&OD. Complete this circuit around Arlington County and it's about 20 miles total, with the biggest hazard being pedestrians and other cyclists.Especially crowded on the first nice days of Spring. Use your bell, keep right, don't run over anybody. This was my favorite urban ride in NOVA.

The C&O canal towpath and Rock Creek Parkway are also great popular rides, if you can tolerate the crowds.
