Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Quite literally everything is carbon fiber, including the handlebars, brakes, everything..

Got a real gift with the language.

Regardless, I think that bike is downright gorgeous, and I'm even more impressed that the 3,2KG version was ridden 20 thousand Kilometers before being retired. That's the kind of usable record worth having.

I talked with a guy at my LBS who rode a 10+ bike. It flexed on climbs and sprints to the point where he felt uncomfortable pushing hard. So this super light weight is really just something to have fun talking about.

Every part on the bike is completely custom made and cannot be bought unless you wanted it made specially for you.

Oh really? Is that what custom means? Here I thought it meant they ordered it from Hong Kong and it had to go through customs.

Yeah, I was wondering what the hell with the down tube shifters. I mean they already have the break levers how much weight can possibly be saved using down tube shifters?

And that's why it's a 6lb bike...if a gram could be saved, it was.

Friction shifters = lighter weight of the shifter itself, plus shorter (metal) cable runs and shorter (metal-wrapped) cable casings. That might be most of the difference between that one and the 3.2 kg one.

honestly, probably not a lot... but in consideration of the whole concept (shift + brake lever v STI shifter), probably 5% savings using a downtube + brake lever over the STI

figure the STI shifters weigh 300g... those custom shifters weighed in a 9g....

Before the UCI came up with the current minimum bike weight, Tour racers sometimes used a downtube shifter for the front d/r to save weight.

I doubt the bike shown is 6 lbs because I see obvious areas where weight could be saved. Take the cassette. That should be a cf gear cluster, or AT LEAST have cf spacers. The cable housing looks standard, unless it's a superlight type I haven't seen before. The brake pads are twice as thick as they need to be.

I know its an old article...but I have to say, I'd be shocked at howl long that thing holds up (if he rides it). The carbon fiber chainring and rear derailleur pulleys don't seem like they would hold up for long...

Very impressive from a technology perspective! OTOH, my road bike comes in at 14lbs. Without looking too hard, I can see that I could take 8lbs of 'ballast' off of my body - without spending $45,000!

That said, there is probably a lot of trickle down from some of those components. Just like in high-end audiophile components, the stupid-expensive stuff eventually makes real-world equipment better for the rest of us.

He did ride it allegedly, but abruptly parted it out and sold all the pieces separately. Maybe I'm too cynical but to me that's a big red flag.

Regarding the D/T shifters, while I have no idea about those carbon ones if you compare Shimano 105 brifters to 105 aero brake levers the difference is about 250 grams, minus 80 or so that the downtube shifters weigh. so it's quite a bit of weight saved.
