Apparently 'Near You' by Francis Craig and his Orchestra was in its ninth week of a 12-week run at the top of the billboard charts on my birthday. I'll have to track it down and have a listen. Also big that year was 'Peg 'o My Heart' by the Harmonicats.

Uggh. "The Three Bells (or Little Jimmy Brown)" by The Browns. I had never heard the song before reading this thread. Watched/listened on YouTube. Wow...depressing. BTW, Aug 20, 1959. PG

I've never heard of this song before but according to Billboard it was "Rumors Are Flying" by Frankie Carle, whom I also never heard of.

I am not a big fan of '50s music. I've already forgotten what song was #1 on my birthday
According to wikipedia, the #1 song in France on the day I was born was by Annie Cordy "Hello, le soleil brille"
(it's the song the prisoners whistle in the movie, "the bridge over the river Kwai")

That was #1 when I was conceived... When I was born, it was another Elvis song... "Too Much"

I don't know why I love such depressing music so much... but it is one of my favorite groups! My fascination started when I heard 'Dark Side of the Moon' in my high school days. I couldn't believe that Money was the hit from that album, there were much better songs to choose from... in fact, I think it was the weakest cut.
But, I digress.

The Witch Doctor by David Seville.
Of course this for the USA. I wasn't born in the USA. My arrival occurred in the UK. The #1 song in the UK was Whole Lotta Woman by Marvin Rainwater.
For those born outside the USA, Birthday No #1 .

I just noted this reply, and thanks for the comment.
When I read that post, it seemed to me to be a repudiation of this seemingly frivolous thread, unrelated to bicycling. I had commented that this is a fun thread; others have called it cool. IMO it is more about time than place, and besides that, American pop music is pretty universal (”The Great American Songbook”).
As Bikey Mikey recently replied,
Personally, I'm unfamiliar with that song and artist, even after googling it, but man, that sure sounded and looked like an American tune and artist.
Seriously? First how would I know?
In Versailles? Yes France!
I don't think they had a number ONE song then--and no it was not during the reign of some Louis!
Would I be going faster on my bike if I knew?

Did you read the OP?
Did you read VNA's post? I think his point was that the referenced website doesn't give you the #1 songs in France.

Probably because the UK rock artist at that time were so heavily by American blues music and musicians. I'll take the UK #1 for my birthday over the US #1 any day. Johnny Ray in the UK and Elvis in the US (Love Me Tender,) I never was, or will I ever be an Elvis fan. Johnny Ray is always welcome listening for me, though.

Darn!
“It's Now Or Never”-Elvis Presley
Not one of my favorites from that era but it could have been worse the week before it was “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini”-Brian Hyland, if you don’t know that song avoid hearing it or it might haunt you. The song that finally took “Now Or Never” off the #1 spot was Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” I like that one.

Micheal, by the Highwaymen. Row the boat ashore! Hallelujah! I feel jealous of the ones who got songs like "Mr. Sandman" or "King of the Road" or "Downtown"... I think I would have been happier even with "Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star" or "Row Row Row Your Boat" or "99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall" or "Henry the Eighth I Am" or....

Actually, I believe it is "The memories of a man in his old age, are the deeds of a man in his prime" from the song "Free Four" on the album "Obscured by Clouds". Apparently the album was a soundtrack of a movie I have never heard of nor seen. Of course it was followed by a line that made the song more Pink Floyd-like. I believe it is something like "He shuffles in the gloom of a sick room, and talks to himself as he dies."
I don't know why I love such depressing music so much... but it is one of my favorite groups! My fascination started when I heard 'Dark Side of the Moon' in my high school days. Don't know that but 8 hours and 12 minutes later "I Love Lucy" debuted.
