Apparently 'Near You' by Francis Craig and his Orchestra was in its ninth week of a 12-week run at the top of the billboard charts on my birthday. I'll have to track it down and have a listen. Also big that year was 'Peg 'o My Heart' by the Harmonicats.

I've never heard of this song before but according to Billboard it was "Rumors Are Flying" by Frankie Carle, whom I also never heard of.

I don't know why I love such depressing music so much... but it is one of my favorite groups! My fascination started when I heard 'Dark Side of the Moon' in my high school days. I couldn't believe that Money was the hit from that album, there were much better songs to choose from... in fact, I think it was the weakest cut.
But, I digress.

Probably because the UK rock artist at that time were so heavily by American blues music and musicians. I'll take the UK #1 for my birthday over the US #1 any day. Johnny Ray in the UK and Elvis in the US (Love Me Tender,) I never was, or will I ever be an Elvis fan. Johnny Ray is always welcome listening for me, though.

Actually, I believe it is "The memories of a man in his old age, are the deeds of a man in his prime" from the song "Free Four" on the album "Obscured by Clouds". Apparently the album was a soundtrack of a movie I have never heard of nor seen. Of course it was followed by a line that made the song more Pink Floyd-like. I believe it is something like "He shuffles in the gloom of a sick room, and talks to himself as he dies."
