Definitely the Montrose ride. You should give it a try some time, you'd like it, they blow all the stop signs also.

don't forget about sierra madre's finest video-taping all the cyclists as they ride past the police dept. or issue traffic citations for riding past stop signs

I was joking about the awards. You would think there was money on the line most days. Some riders take big chances during that sprint. I even had a pro rider comment that he wouldn't take chances like that at a big NRC race.

Lately I have noticed a lot of cops parked near the stop signs on Sierra Madre. Last weekend I saw two cars pulled over for what I assumed was running stop signs.

For those of you who are still in the dark about Sierra Madre's finest and cycists in general and the Montrose ride in particular. You should be aware that SMPD target cyclists running stop signs. This is a regular Sat. morning occurance due to years and years of the Montrose Ride finishing on Sierra Madre Blvd and Baldwin. This was the contested finish and as such most of the riders would blow thru the stop sign at Mountain Ave. in order to win the Sat. morning World Championships. But after numerous complaints from residents about rude cyclists and running the stop signs, SMPD started a crack down. Efforts have been made to have the contested finish of the ride moved up to Grandview, but fewer and fewer riders are using that finish and use the old one instead. Many of these riders still run the stop sign at Mountain Trail thinking they are vieing for the win (yeah right). So the PD waits for the ride to roll thru and gives tickets to anyone who runs the stop sign. Last week the PD had cars at ALL the stop signs on Seirra Madre Blvd. and got a number of other riders, who might have stopped for the one on Mountain Trail, but still ran the other ones.

Do yourself a favor and save getting a ticket by not running any of the stop signs in Seirra Madre.

that is all

Yeah I know. I see more risky moves on the Montrose and Rose Bowl rides than I do in many Cat 4 races.

As for the tickets, it's never a problem for me as I'm off the back and obeying all traffic laws by the time we're at Foothill the final time.

I like both finishes. I think the Grandview finish is better. It's definitely harder. I'm not sure about the short loop, but it seems like most people on the long loop (at least those toward the front), do the Grandview finish. I haven't been the last two weeks, but I have been there pretty regularly the last couple of months and it seems like most people go up to Grandview. There are always a couple that I see turn off. Glad I missed the tickets last week.

Maybe if the winner of the Grandview finish put his hands up like he won a Tour stage, people would know it's over

Redal, I was referring more to the short ride, so I should have clarified that.

I must chime in to say the Sierra Madre police SUCK with regards to ticketing cyclists. The peloton gives the town some of it's flavor. . .

Fascists..

My friend was issued a moving violation ticket by one of Sierra Madre's finest when he didn't come to a complete stop at that very same stop sign. This occurred one Saturday morning last April. The officer told us that he sympathized with bicyclists but that the local residents had been complaining to the city council. He advised us to contest the ticket in court.

I've not ridden that section of Sierra Madre much since then. Sort of dampens the enthusiasm for me when the motorists and residents resent my presence on a bicycle. I did noticed a dramatic decrease in the number of cyclists along this route in the following weeks. The increased law enforcement was successfully discouraging cycling through the town.

I would think that a community that is as nature conscious as Sierra Madre would welcome human powered environmentally-friendly transportation such a a bicycle. But I have to conclude that if my cycling begins to conflict with their right to motorized transportation, then it's just not tolerated.

Just come to a complete stop at the stop signs. It's not a big deal. You don't have to put a foot down, just do a little fake track stand and go when it's your turn.
