Schwinn Le Tour __ Is it a decent bike?
Hi all.
Looking for opinions on the Schwinn Le Tour.
I have never owned a drop bar bike and this thing is cheap and probably serviceable.
Not so muuch looking for appraisal (guys asking 50) as much as is the bike worth owning?
It needs minor work/maint i'm sure but me and my kid are getting into this stuff so that's actually good and I'm looking for a cheap entry into road-type bikes.
No idea on the year but would love help on that as well if anybody knows.
The bike is silver and all the lettering is red.
Pics look like 10- spd
I've done some searching based on the color and drivetrain and I can't find anything solid.
Any help or direction is appreciated and thanks much everybody!

Bad example
There were quite a few variations on the Le Tour. If it has wheels with steel rims, no. If it has aluminum rims, then it should be sturdy and dependable, if not exciting.

Check out this year to year list and compare the listed features to your bike.

I had two, made 25? yrs apart. lots of miles on both. the earlier ones were heavier, so what? a bike is a bike is a bike, right? I got mine for $20 even tho the guy wanted $25. the second one cost me $200
when in doubt, build a bike & go ride!

Good for $50. The really decent vintage stuff starts at about $200. At the $50 mark, you will see a lot of crap. This one is not crap.

I'm new to this forum and this is just my opinion and you know what they say about that, if the bike in question is in good overall condition buy it. Overall condition means look for rust, check all the components work ie shifters derailleurs tires rims and seat. If these all look like they are in good condition chances are with minor adjustments you will be on the road. BTW I own 2 of them.
They are on the heavy side but if you are into racing then look else where. If you want a bike that can take a bump and you just cruise on then its a good choice.

They can be decent and they are ten and twelve speeds, they are not worth over $100 like craigslist likes to claim. To me they are as common as a ford taurus and who's paying over 500 for a 92 taurus?

I owned two Le Tours a 1986 and 1987. I rode them for about five years each. Both were 12-speeds with 52/42 crank sets. Just a basic somewhat heavy steel bike I abused on city streets.
To be honest, the bike just beat me up and were not fun on longer rides with all the road chatter.
Perhaps newer Aluminum rims and better tires would smooth out the ride quality?
I paid $300 each for new Le Tours at that time.

I bought a Schwinn Le Tour in the 80's, it was a sturdy, albeit heavy bike ill suited to long rides, especially in hilly areas. At the same time I bought a Schwinn 564 Aluminum "Paramount" which was a lot more money and a lot more (or less as it happens) bike. I still have the 564.
