Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's totally dysfunctional. It's our healthcare system. I get "paid" by Medicare and Blue Cross and Aetna etc. but THEY dictate how much I get paid. I still have to pay my rent and my staff and my other expenses (which keep going up) so whatever is left after all that is paid is my "salary" which is sadly about half of what it was 10 years ago. The only "benefit" of this setup is I allegedly am my own boss and have alleged autonomy compared to an employed "provider."

At this rate I will be working at the LBS or Chipotle in a few more years. Or else sell out to the healthcare system and be a cog in the Machine.

I’m so sorry. How paradoxical and sad about the lack of freedom.

Mmmmm - 2lbs of organic strawberries on sale at TJs for 4 bucks. Prolly have to go through them in the next two days, though, so may have to Bubba Gump it. Had a lunch salad with strawberries, arugula, goat cheese and glazed pecans - it was gooood.

I am ok with that but the MOF may not agree. And it's cheaper to keep her.

I’m trying to avoid a purchase for the same reasons. Good luck. I think I’m ordering tonight, maybe, we’ll perhaps in the morning after I slept on it, again.

Well that is because a carbon fibre bike is a plastic bike. It's just that the reinforcement in the plastic is made from carbon fibre. Which can be shaped and moulded and cured into light and fantastic shapes, even if you have be very careful when working with the stuff.

Would a frame material by any other name be as laterally stiff and vertically compliant?

Yes indeedy.

The proper name for the material is carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. The down-market material we call fiberglass is essentially the same thing with silicon glass fiber instead of carbon.

So I have the ultimate Fred accessory which I bought last year, and if I have the courage I will try it on tomorrow’s ride.

I hope I don’t get ostracized. It’s the equivalent of a combo slide rule/pocket protector in the eyes of “serious” cyclists.

It’s the Take-A-Look mirror.

Good Lord! What follow that, SPD Keens; yellow, club fit, jerseys; a huge seat bag with a ratchet set and a kielbasa in it; and a non-ironic beard?
