For me, I think I could say that 15*F would be a good cutoff. As it approaches that temp, I start thinking "Damn, you know, it's actually starting to get cold!" Much above that and I can keep myself warm almost with just a T shirt under a windbreaker. Around 15*F I'd better have paid attention when I got dressed or I'm going to be hurtin'.

^^^ I was out playing after a blizzard let up a bit a couple years ago - and with windchill it was -16F. Got a call at 10 pm from some other wild mtb -- got called out with two words ..... "virgin snow". Was living with my Mom at the time - she thought I was nuts.

I think my limit is -40, but I haven't seen the mercury dip to that point in quite a few years so I have no way to confirm it.
If you are dressed properly, windchill should not matter.

I haven't yet reached my cold limit. The coldest I've ridden in was 4ºF (–16ºC), and I found that to be manageable with the proper clothing.
I'm a total wimp when it comes to the heat though. I'll ride to work in any weather... but I won't go on long rides over 90ºF (32ºC) or so, and my enjoyment starts to suffer over about 80ºF (27ºC).

So we have two folks by the combined definition...Tude and rhm...gone for the swim and rode the bike.
So does that make them #1 and #2 in the club, Tude would have to get #1 as she did it on purpose

I will say though, that I was a little grateful this morning that I had to clean up after a very sick dog and thus miss the window that allows me to ride in and still make my train east. I need better cold clothes.
Next time, I'm out when you pass, I will yell "Doohickey!", no doubt to the surprise and consternation of my still-slumbering wife.

I've ridden down to about -25°F. It actually wasn't too bad. I'm hoping to beat that but it's not likely, even those temps are quite rare around here.

I'm well north of the Mason Dixon line and still riding, does that get me in? This morning was the coldest so far...about 37F.

problem I found with -20F is that frostbite happens really fast. Then again, that only happened the first time I did it.
I rode an extra 5 miles over my normal 4.5 mile commute this morning. It was cold enough to form fairly significant icicles on my beard today. I stood around outside and melted them before I went in. I decided that 20F is about time I start wearing ear protection. It isn't strictly necessary over a 5 mile distance though. I'm wearing 3 layers on top, and haven't been cold. Still sweating in fact. There is probably some limit for that, but I haven't really gotten close yet.

Last year I quit at 6F, nothing messes with the cold acclimation like a week in Manila.
This year I'm cheating. Hand warmers in the mittens and boots.
This morning it was 9F with a tail wind of 8mph (south wind), coming home it was 27F with an 8mph head wind and snow. It was better than Monday, 20 something with a 20mph (north wind) head wind.

It was 20 this morning, with plenty of snow. Decided to take the bike out and play around with tire pressure to see what gave the best traction and rolling resistance combination on my Marathon Winters.
Had on jeans, hoodie, t-shirt and ski vest and I was comfy for my testing. Had I been going to work I would have added one more bottom layer and substituted the ski vest for my bike wind jacket.
I've found so far that 20 is a tough temp to judge to go either 2 or 3 layers under the wind jacket. So far this year 3 has been too many. I think below 20 the 3rd layer will become necessary but I still haven't found reason to a 3rd layer to the legs.

I have two main issues with riding in the cold (er, about 10F or below) --
1. Keeping the wind out of the eyes without the glasses/goggles fogging over, and
2. Keeping my "intake air" warm enough to keep the lungs from freezing without causing the glasses/goggles to fog over.
As per # 2, a ski-mask or scarf seems to blow the moist warm breath right onto the goggles. I've thought of making some sort of snorkel that diverts the breath down the shirt, but that seems silly.
Anyone have any tips about keeping goggles or glasses free of fog? "Cat-crap" or special goggles?
