Sunday -- 18.93 km hilly bicycle ride exploring the area + upper body weight workout + core workout + 200 steps climbed.

Brilliant sunshine, 23C and winds gusting to 30 km/h.

The last couple days have been dark and stormy, but we managed to get out this evening for a quick walk down to the beach (shown in the photos above, and in several more photos you'll find if you click the photos above).

What's the story with the red window?

Yeah ... good question.

There is this rather wealthy guy here who built the Mona: Mona ... a rather strange museum. He also bought up the land around, along the foreshore and in that particular spot, Wilkinson's Point, he installed a red window. There's not much else there ... a couple benches, a wall with a red window, and a wall with a clear window, and an area that looks like it used to be an old dock or something ... like a building was there, was knocked down, and most of the rubble was cleared away.

Evidently it is supposed to be some sort of facility for get-togethers or something ... but when we've been there, we've often been the only ones there. At most I think I've seen maybe half a dozen people walk around the area really quickly and leave. There's really nothing there to make people want to linger. For us, it makes an interesting backdrop for the bicycles ... and since there's no one around, we can take photos without people walking through.
- GASP! Park Facilities

The last time we were there, a lady wandered around a bit and then told us that he great-grandfather used to own the land, but it was sold off and she wanted to visit it to see what had been done with it. She didn't say what she thought of it.

Strange, but in a nice way. Interesting.

Thursday 01 January, 2015 -- I did a 16.43 km ride today. Rowan rode slightly longer than that because he had to go back and retrieve his sunglasses.

We were testing a pair of mountain bikes Rowan built ... so about half the ride was on the road on the way to and from the local reserve, and half the ride was off-road in the reserve.

Nice day, high of about 20C ... and it dropped to about 15C by the time we got home. No wonder I felt a bit chilly. I forgot my jacket so I did the ride wearing shorts and a cap-sleeved jersey. But it was mainly sunny with winds gusting to 44 km/h.

First working day of the new year ... and 5.6 km of walking.
To and from bus.
From allergy clinic.
To and from library.
To and from the beach ... it was a hot summer day today. Good day for a splash at the beach.

Saturday 03 January 2015 -- 34.51 km. A hot and hilly ride in the local area. Explored some roads, found an interesting route option.

Plus upper body and core work.

Plus a 3 km walk to the beach and along the beach and back.

High today ... +34C (that's 93.2 for those of you on the old system). And now we're having the inevitable thunderstorm.

Getting ready to go for a ride ...

Road sign ... I think that's a quoll ...

Cycling along one of many bays ...

Our beach ...

Sunday -- 40.7 km up and down and up and down the local hills ... practicing some hills that are becoming familiar, trying out some new ones.

Nice day ... a bit windy gusting up to 41 km/h but a high of 23.8C

Chilly day for a walk (didn't get above freezing until after I got home). Usually it isn't so bad, but I had the rare 10+ mph headwind for half of the route . Did pick up a Rx for my daughter and paid some money to my PCP along the way.

I came to a fork in the road ...

My route takes me down this hill ... down to the road you see below ... and then down to the beach. I have tried to climb this hill once, but had to walk. So I figured out another way up.

At the beach.

^^ That's funny, there's a restaurant called Fork in the Road just a few blocks from my house.

Equally bicycle related for this alleged LCF thread:
I often listen to the songs from Motown including A Fork in the Road by the great Smokey Robinson and the Miracles when I ride my bicycle. This song was on the other side of Tracks of My Tears, probably the best 45, ever.

I get a chuckle out of it.

Apparently the road used to fork there, but it is now a large roundabout ... so perhaps it's more of a soup spoon now.

In addition to the ride, I also walked down to our local grocery store to pick up a few things.

One of Rowan's coworkers gave him a bag of freshly picked apricots. They are just ripe, and won't last too long, so I needed to do something with them. Several people made good suggestions, but one grabbed my attention: apricot and apple crumble. But I needed to get some ingredients ... hence the walk to the shops.

This may have been the first crumble I've ever made, or if not, then it has been so long since I've made one, I've forgotten. I was greatly relieve that it turned out.

Now I'm trying to figure out what to do with cherries.

You can make "Kompot" or jam out of them.

Except for the long 17% hill, I managed to make it all the way home without pausing(except for lights) on my hilly commute.

That's equally coincidental. I grew up just a couple miles (or less) from where Smokey and many of the other Motown stars also grew up. And Stevie Wonder attended the state School for the Blind just a few blocks from where I live now.
