How do you carry your U-lock?

I have a Kryptonite Fuggedaboutit mini. Tried being slick in mounting it into my Topeak Super Tourist DX rack, but I've been foiled.

When I am only running with 1 pannier I have the lock vertical, put the two tips of the u up through the slot in the top shelf of the rack, and shackle it in. Works fine. But I haven't found a good spot (other than in the bags) when have a trunk bag or both panniers.

The mini is about 1/8" too short to run horizontally across the rack, just under the plate, on top of the next lower set of bars, and around the vertical bars for the center support. I thought that would be very good because it wouldn't interfere with my trunk bag or panniers, but just missed.

The mini is so darn heavy I'm not a big fan of banging around in the bag. I'd like to find a clever frame location but it is eluding me.

how about around the seat post? you can leave the locking section near the rack/trunkbag. if it move around too much, just bungee it to the rack.

not the seatpost!

My kraptonite frame bracket snapped while riding, so I placed the lock under my seat and then it got wedged between my rear tire and frame and i got thrown from the bike. see pic: https://img580.imageshack.us/img580/6811/kryptofail.jpg

I now carry my lock in my backpack. if yours is small, maybe this won't happen to you, but just be warned.

PS - I said "mini" but I guess I just meant small-ish compared to the big u-locks. It's not one of the dinky chain locks.
This is the lock: https://www.kryptonitelock.com/produ...=1000&pid=1095

XtraJack - unfortunately I have a wheel there.

idiotekniQues -- this thing is heavy. Would need to be sporting some Filson Tin Cloth trousers for the pocket to hold.

It'll jam in somewhere genius one of these days.

In the immortal words of David St. Hubbins -- It's a fine line between stupid and clever.

Where do you need to carry it to? Thanks to great advice here, I leave my locked to the bike rack at work 24/7. When I'm at work, it's securing my bike, and when I'm not at work, it's waiting for me to show up...

I utilize dead space by using Two Fish mount.
Also here is an older thread with some ideas:

Stuff it in my rack-top bag, or use elastic straps to strap it to my rear rack.

i know. i have seen more than a few folks riding in the city with a krytpo NY mini in their back pocket.

sometimes i ride with my series 2 evolution mini in my back pocket. as long as it is jeans or cargo shorts it is just fine. it stays put. in fact the series 2 mini is 1" longer than yours, so i see no issues actually. at first i thought it would be very uncomfortable but it was not bad - only noticeable once or twice on a 10 mile ride. and i have a wider woman's seat.

dude... do you commute to the same place every day? Do you lock it at the same place? Just leave the lock there. Those gnarly hardcore locks are a pain to lug around. Thats my recommendation.

I have a more low-key mini that fits in my back pocket. But 2 hardcore locks that I leave at the places I commute to (school, work).

Bikes: At one point it was a Trek 700 something. Now it have Velocity Psycho wheels, a tape job. Thumb shifters (Shimano Deore). Corncob grouping, and drop bar ends all wrapped up in tape.

I keep it on my back rack with the bottom of the "U" through the lip that is close to the back of the bike. I have a bungy that is wrapped around the rack that holds the lock down. When I'm on the road bike it just goes in my back pocket.

Thanks for the link to that other thread, Colleen. In my haste I made the cardinal forum sin of not searching well and just dumping a new thread on an old topic. This post is real close to how I carry my lock some of the time, but with the rack I've got the extra layer of horizontal bars creates nice lodgement for it.

2su, et al, I'm a fan of having my lock malinger at the rack, but of late I have become a multi-destination guerilla biker and I want to bring the good lock with me. Plenty of workable options even if a genius moment doesn't come along. I, too, have had some issues with the kryptonite mount, and the NY model doesn't come with one probably because of its weight.

The mega belt looks a little more subtle and promising than this:

I would be careful about leaving a lock on the rack. I did this for two weeks and it was great not having to carry the extra weight to work. But the police or city removed the lock one night.

Mine is stuck in an outside pocket of my pannier. Leaving it at work seems problematic since then I could only ride to work.

I've seen some clever homemade holsters to fit on the rack, something you might consider.

I leave it in my office bike rack. However if I ever have to bring along my U-Lock, I'd hang it upside down on the rear rack with the U-bar facing the bottom. Although TBH, I've not tried it, so not sure if the thick U-bar would even go through the rack's gap.

This is what I do. If I go for a ride on the weekend I have another lock I can take with me that I either put in my pannier or back pack.

I keep mine in my basket under my stuff, or in the trunk bag. that way it's with me if and when I stop somewhere on the way to and from work.

I carry mine in my belt. I don't need to lock it onto myself like the person in the picture though.
