Those fenders appear to work quite well. I've been thinking about getting a pair.

That looks very attractive! I'd be happy to park any of my bikes there.

Not meaning to derail the thread, but I'm kind of curious about cycling in Holland. Here in the US most of the praise for Dutch bike infrastructure we read about are the separated cycle paths within the larger cities, especially Amsterdam. Does that approach extend to smaller towns and rural routes? Bringing up Google Maps and enabling the cycling overlay suggests that's the case. If so, must be nice not to have to mix it up with the cars and trucks.
Thanks!

The cycling infrastructure here in Holland is pretty well-developed, especially in the smaller towns and rural areas. It's the older inner cities where there often isn't enough room for a separated traffic lanes. The outcome there is that the cyclists have pretty much taken over, especially in Amsterdam. You have to be pretty desperate (or clueless) to want to drive your car into Amsterdam.

BTW, cars are not your biggest enemy in Amsterdam:

It would seem that having some sort of noise maker on your bicycle, like a bell, would help a lot here?

Forty beautiful old school miles yesterday on a 1961 Herse in the Bay Area.

I put on an Ideale 92 Diagonale saddle this summer. Have been pleased to find it fits me even better than a Brooks B17 (my usual default saddle). And the extra inch of backwards adjustment on the Ideale has also improved my fit on the bike. Who else knew that classic French saddles may give a better fit with classic French frame angles?

Bike still makes me smile every time I shift the chainstay mounted, continous cable activated, door spring energized "Cyclo" rear derailleur. Works every time, and was a top choice for wide range gearing for nearly three decades (1930s, 40s, and 50s).

If your goal is to irritate people, yes. Otherwise, the effect is limited.

The same derailleur is featured on the Blondin in Gugie’s recent thread. First time I’d ever seen that, and now here it is twice in a week! Very cool bike and photos.

You weren't looking hard enough at Bob Freeman's collection. There has to be a few of them in one of his sheds.

Well, sensory overload. Plus all those bikes were effectively saying “hey the eyes are up here buddy”.

Jarman Gap Rd - slopes of Blue Ridge looking east

Blue Ridge! Driveway is paved, road is gravel. That’s how people roll here.

I pretend I’m in Italy here. Pink stucco villa just off camera.
I thought I posted this earlier but don’t see it, so apologies if it’s a duplicate. I took the Ciöcc out on a last, or maybe next to last, shake down cruise before the Susquehanna Unpaved Ride next month. Dick Woods road is a somewhat heavily trafficked road in Albemarle County but there are stretches of almost unused and gravel road which I explored today. It was a short ride and I had a little hop in my step at the end so decided to ride part way up Jarman Gap road in Crozet. This is one of the local back doors to Skyline Drive.

We took a nice ride in the early fall air. Glorious!

We came upon an old defunct farm. The barn and the main house are gone, but the sons still use the place for the fields. Here's an old beauty.

When we got home, Frau Polly was all upset. "You left me to guard the gasthaus all by myself," she cried!

^ I love seeing pics from you guys in CO. Everyone talks about the PNW and how they love the scenery, but you guys have got a little bit of everything. I need to make a trip out there next summer just to do some riding in various places, maybe over a week or so.

I think I just sowed the seed for my next adventure - 9 months from now, of course!

I rode into Seattle yesterday to go investigate a bike shop I had recently heard about on Capitol Hill.

It was a beautiful fall day, folks out enjoying it in various ways like these kayakers as I passed over them on the Mercer Island Bridge.

Riding to Capitol Hill, I pass by one of the more interesting shops in the area.

The Good Weather Bike Shop and Cafe Good Weather is tucked into the back of this alley packed with trendy shops.

The Bike shop is pretty cool. Kind of in the same vein as a Rapha Store but easier to feel comfortable in. I had a beer (from my favorite brewery Holy Mountain!) and a delicious sandwich and also picked up a new pair of gloves.

I finished the ride by looping North around Lake Washington on the Burke Gilman then South via the Sammamish River and East Lake Sammamish Trails to Issaquah before heading East back to my car parked in Preston.

Cycling here is excellent. Top of the line anywhere. I live in the south, near the coast and even here in the countryside we have very good infrastructure with miles and miles of good roads. Don't worry at all! And: very welcome!
