Tiagra 4700 cross compatibility with Sora R3000

After replacing my Toughroad with hydraulic shifters I’m left with my og Tiagra shifters. The Poseidon X that I am building up I originally planned on swapping all my parts from my Nashbar CX bike which had Sora R3000 shifters and derailleurs.

I already tried to get the shifters to work and it does *sorta* work, however I believe the 9 speed chain is definitely too big for the 10 speed cassette. That being said, is there any reason (I’m thinking pull ratio, which I don’t know what the ratios are) that this shouldn’t work?

Tiagra 4700 uses the same cable pull as road 11 speed, so you'll need an 11 speed road rear derailleur or your Tiagra 4700 rear derailleur. Your Sora 3000 Rear derailleur won't work with the Tiagra 4700 shifter.

It sounds confusing, but the 4700 uses the same cable pull as 11 speed to shift 10 cogs.

Why? you are trying to mix 9 and 10-speed road, which, leaving out the additional complexity of the 4700 shifter pull, never worked in the first place.

Compatibility (with the exception of 4700) is within speeds, go try to mix 2 different speeds, and you have no compatibility, as you appear to be finding out.

IME a 9spd chain will work on a 10spd cassette IF the cassette does not have any single step jumps from cog to cog (ie 11->12 or 13->14).
Single step differences are close enough that the next cog grabs the rivet of the chain and attempts to pull it up but the shift is never completed
and the result is a jerky drive. However cassettes with at least a 2 tooth jump cog to cog are enough larger cog to cog that the chain stays
where it is put.
