Getting a quick link for my Shimano chain
Cleaning my road bike chain has become a bit of a hassle with the chain still on the bike. My current Shimano CN-HG53 9-speed Bicycle Chain has no quick link and cant be removed without needed to buy completely new pins which isn't desirable. Are there quick links that I can buy to use with this chain - can I just remove a link and replace it with the quick link? Will I have to just buy a chain with a quick link?

Bikes: A steel framed 26" off road tourer from a manufacturer who thinks they are cool. Giant Anthem. Trek 720 Multiroad pub bike. 10 kids bikes all under 20". Assorted waifs and unfinished projects.

Yep, I'd recommended the Connex ones, you don't need any tools to break the chain then

I have using the gold SRAM Power Link for years on my 9 speed chains with great success. Easy to remove and re-install. Don

Another choice is the KMC " Missing Link". All three of the recommended links are fine with the Connex probably being the most convenient but a bit more expensive. Which ever you buy, get it in 9-speed width. And yes, remove two adjacent pins from the same outer plate your Shimano chain and replace that link with the master link.

Thanks for all the responses.
One more question - is it abnormal to put a quick link on a road bike? Is it more of a MTB thing?

Actually, these days it's a chain thing since most chains now come with one and those chains are used on every type of bike. Shimano, 10-speed and below, is the sole holdout and even they are coming around to the master links.

Or if you want to put in a bit of an order to justify shipping, whole Connex chains are pretty cheap out of Germany, from Bike-Discount, Bike-Components, Bike24, etc etc. Just watch out, stuff is so cheap there you end up ordering way more stuff than you thought you needed...

Putting a quick link on a road bike chain is completely normal. Don't give it a second thought.
