I'm using a 5 speed triple (Sugino AT with a new, un-ramped/un-pinned middle ring) on a 10 speed setup.

If you're using indexed front shifting, I figure as long as the FD matches the spec of the chainrings- you're cool.

If you're using friction front shifting- as long as the FD isn't incompatible with the ring setup you're cool. I had a Dura Ace 7803 FD that wouldn't come close to working without the right sized ramped and pin rings- It may not have even worked if they were the right size and ramped and pinned- if it wasn't a chainring/BB set. It was totally finicky that was even WITH friction shifters. But using friction shifters I was able to get a Z206, Cyclone, Mountech and finally a DA 7700 to work without fail.

I've had 2 or 3 instances of the chain getting jammed between the middle and small ring- in 5 years.
