The after-ride pub app.
Hopefully, this app will be back up and running soon.

The ridewithgps website and Golden Cheetah Windows/Mac/Linux program.
Ridewithgps
It generates course files with custom cue sheet entries, like a water icon with "Safeway on left."
For planning it lets you choose the map source. You can use satellite views to look at traffic/tree cover. You can use the Open Street Map cycle map including points of interest like water sources/bike shops and bicycle routes. You can use Google Street View to look at road quality.
It can trace an imported .gpx or .fit recording to generate a route.
It can join segments into a long ride, or split routes into short ones to work around GPS computer bugs.
Golden Cheetah
Keeps the original data on your computer.
It lets you edit anomalies so they don't impact your stats.
It gives you your choice of metrics for performance management.
It lets you track performance over time; e.g. best 10 minute power by week with corresponding average heart rate.
Terrain, road quality, and traffic are too variable to let an app generate routes for recreational riding.

I agree, most apps are not good for your mobile phone's health, they always use your bandwidth and use your data allowance to call home constantly, constantly in communication with mothership using your data allowances, all while burning your battery power, never mind stealing your personal data and invading your privacy, there is not a such thing as a "Free" nice app.
On my working phone i use minimum of apps, e.g. for my online banking i just use my bank's website and never their app, etc.
On my 2nd old phone with no Sim card, no mobile data plan, sometimes I use Strava and ride with gps
