062667 is indeed a 1983 24" 720.

A for Mike Appel?

And is that a V on the chainstay lug? Haven't seen that letter before.

Could be a Bullseye bottom bracket to go with the hubs. Wait 'til you open it up, if it is a Bullseye BB. Two sets of balls on each side, for four in total, oriented at right angles for thrust and annular loads.

I used to order a pretty good number of Bullseye hubs to sell over the counter (back then, Phil hubs had to be sent back to Phil for bearing replacement, whereas the Bullseye hubs were removable in seconds using one small Allen wrench), but I believe the only Bullseye bottom bracket I ever saw was shown to me by the regional sales rep.

It looks like anodized blocks with allen wrench heads set into it. If I remember correctly it has no cups pressed or screwed into the frame.

I cannot wait to get rid of that god-awful saddle and that foam bar padding.

Bikedued,
A great find for you! probably a 720, with the original Ecoduopar, and a wonderful bunch of parts. The Bulls Eye stuff is bomb-proof and the 27" tires will ride nicely, and can fit 32s. I have a pair of silver fenders that will fit if you are interested I pulled them off a 720 that had a front end crash so they should fit right out of the box. Lemme know if you want them. Smiles, MH

One and a quarters with fenders should be fine with me. I tend to like touring bikes not splattering me with wet mud and water from the road so yeah. It does have 27 in competition super champion rims laced to the bullseye hubs. After a good cleaning this should be a really nice rider.

Thinking of black cotton wrap with about eight coats of shellac. Or maybe just black cork. Before that I will have to decide on black or Honey Brown Brooks saddles because. It will get one of those too.

Here's a couple of pictures of the bottom bracket if anybody knows what this is let me know. Never seen anything like it before.

I just now noticed there are letters stamped in that ring around the BB spindle. Cleaning that should reveal who made it.

No info whatsoever obtained from knowing what is stamped, sigh... Stamped as follows. " B SCE109 USA " Annoying at best... Maybe the drive side has more info? SCE109 almost sounds like a bearing ID number?

And it is.. A needle roller bearing. Forgot to mention the INA also stamped on it... Apparently you buy a couple of these, and pop them into these cups... Still bizarre and never seen or heard of this bearing style in a bottom bracket before.

Fantastic purchase and lovely build! Curious what those hubs look like when you get to renovating them.

As I said in post 27, I don't think our shop ever stocked the Bullseye bottom bracket, although we sold the hubs. The BB looked just a bit too wacky for the average customer to take it seriously.

I'm going to go by feel mainly. They will still do the forever spin, so they can't be too horrible. I have not even had a chance to dismount the wheels yet.

That's amazing!!

Built by someone who really threw down... and then didn't ride it.

Somebody DID put a horrible upright saddle and cheapest 27" tire at the bike shop tires on it, probably ten years ago... They did a shabby job of it too, since the bead on the rear tire isn't fully seated on the rim, causing it to bounce
when ridden, lol. They probably thought the rim was bent and stopped riding it.

That will be remedied shortly. Panaracer Pasela tourguard (now tour tite) skinwalls in 27x1 1/4, 32mm presta tubes, and velox rim strips on the way! I ordered tubes, because I have a sneaking suspicion
that along with the cheap tires it has the thick no flat tubes. It just feels too heavy, you know what I mean. Full 531 bike, and feels like a high ten frame with alloy wheels when lifted.,,,,BD

OH!! and that badly matched seat bag... Yep, CO2 cartridge with mini filler head, new tube with the wrong valve type (that would have sucked) and a presta/schrader adapter.

You might be expecting too much from this- yes- it's 531, but it's a touring bike.

It's like comparing my 1978 TX700 with my 1978 730- they're both full 531- not a whole lot of difference between them, but the TX700 is a tank in comparison.

I had a Miyata 1000 in the past, and it felt like this weight with fat tires, front and rear racks, and SKB fenders. This has a rear rack, now that most of the accessories are off. Well see
as I investigate further. Not complaining per say, just having it and being able to ride it soon is good enough. Doesn't have to be a lightweight.

Girlfriend recently acquired one and it actually feels light to me (for a tourer) as shown in these photos, granted it’s a 21”.

700c with 32mm tires. Fits ok but it’s very tight at the fork crown and with the VO provided hardware the tire rubbed the bolt and it had to be cut shorter). A bit tight at brake bridge as well.

Her 86 Miyata 210 had much more clearance.

It now sports VO touring pedals which are even lighter than the pictured sylvans.

Dog/cat photo was added on accident but I’m leaving it for you all.

Nice looking ride. Curious that mine is so much lighter in color. I guess they varied during the years of production?

Does anyone know where to get the seat tube decals now that Velocals is gone? I also need some larger Christophe toe clips...

I'm more of a cat person but those two are adorable....!

I believe they came in those two colors in 1983.

Vintage-Trek lists one color, dark pewter. I guess some got a lighter batch..? That color name kind of describes both colors.. Oh well, it is the color it is, regardless of specs.

You're right. It looks like your color may be the 1982 color, Taupe with brown panels? So perhaps a late 1982 frame moved to canti's or an early 83 frame before the color change.

I wonder if JohnDThompson or anyone else can confirm.

I have a taupe 520 from 84 and it's like the color of a cardboard box with metallic flakes?

Well then I'm stumped! Maybe one of the colors came as frame only?
