Chain ring or cassette change over?
Hi all.I just purchased a 2012 Marin Lucas Valley,my first brand new bike for myself.The unit comes with 52/42/30 and 11-26 cassette.I would like to have a little more hill climbing capability for the hills out here in British Columbia,Canada.This would come in handy especially when I am thinking about doing some touring.Any suggestions?

Not knowing which Tiagra rear derailleur came on your bike, it's hard to say. [strike]You can can use up to 31T as the largest gear on the rear if you have the short cage RD. If you have the long cage, it can go bigger[/strike].

If you have the newest Shimano Tiagra RD, then they now offer a Tiagra-level 12-30T rear cassette.
If it happens to be their previous model, then it can be problematic to go over 11-28T. I've known of people who have had a lot of problems when trying to use a 30T on the old version.

As already mentioned, if you post the model of derailleur you will get more detailed assistance.

According to Shimano, the old version Tiagra has a supported max rear cog size of 27. Although many people have reported they have used 28T and 29T cogs successfully, however some have said it can be balky with a 29.
The new version Tiagra supports a rear cog size of up to 30T.
