My Sons First Century
So on Thursday the boy and I headed out with a goal of topping his biggest ride ever of 133.4km. We headed out after I called school to tell the he would not be coming to school but riding with his Dad. Off we go on what turns out to be a great day on the bike. His jersey was full of his favourite on the bike food, granola bars, rice crispy squares and poptarts. Our route started off with some flat ground for a pretty good warmup then worked our way into rollers and hills. WE really have no real flat ground and no mountains but do a lot of climbs that go well over 105 with numorous hills hitting 15%. So reality is we get a great mix of terrain. After 90k of riding we stopped at a bistro that are known for welcoming cyclists and had a light lunch then back on the road. Around 130k mark he started to get a little tired but after a quick stop for a doughnut and a chocolate milk he was good to go again. All told it was 167km with 4600' of climbing and an average speed of 26.2kph. Pretty proud of my guy and looking forward to many more km's together.

Kudos to you and your son.
I would have loved for my Dad to allow me to miss a day of school to do something like this with him.
Great experience and great accomplishments for both of you.

That sounds great, and I hope to do something similar with my 7 year old son some day.
What route did you follow, around Oshawa again?

My son rode RAGBRAI (just short of 500 miles in 7 days), including the century day, when he was 9rs old on his own bike. You're son isn't too far off from that with the proper training. It helps to have a proper road bike for them too. My son rode a Schwinn Primus that I outfitted with a full set of used Dura Ace components. Kids are much more durable than we give them credit for. In fact there is an 8 kid team doing the Race Across America this year. I think their average age is 15 or 16yrs old and there's one 14yr old on the team. It'll be fun to watch them race across the country!

Would love to see where you ride for numerous hills hitting 15% around Oshawa.
