Hi out there in vintageland, does anybody know where I can get a set of hubs (campy style, ofmega preferably) for my dad's bianchi, I'm fixing it up for him for his birthday, and besides little rubber odds and ends I mainly only need to replace the hubs (there's a bad wobble in the rear). I'm really trying to stick with an italian manufacturer, because EVERYTHING on this bike is italiano-made (or stamped at least) - even the toe clip strap buckles say "bianchi" on them. I found a set of ofmega's on ebay for about $105 (NOS) which would be perfect, but I don't really want to spend that much (there's a set of 28h ofmega hubs from the same seller for 40 bucks, what's the difference besides 8 holes?) Any help is appreciated, thanks. I'll be sure and post some pics when I have it all nicely cleaned up (gotta find brake pads and hoods too, I think the brakes and levers are Modolo Flash). peace out

p.s. rear is 6sp (126mm spacing?)

How much do you weigh? 28 hole conventional wheels are pretty spare...how much time do you have? when's your father's birthday? I've seen complete ofmega wheels go cheap on eBay. Do you know the vintage of the bike? The original early '80s bianchi ofmegas were campy copies with little black bands covering the oil ports and everything. (I heard a rumor once that ofmega manufactured some of campy's hubs...dunno if that's true or not). Post us some pictures. We love bikie porn.

What type of hubs do you have? You may want to see what's causing the wobble as I've got 70s campy hubs still going strong, some with all original parts.

NOS campagnolo cones can be found (ebay, wwcyclery) with NOS axles for ca. $15.00, quality bearings can be had from LBS. If the cups are toast it's harder to find campy cups and more work to to install. I've also picked up NR/SR record wheelsets in decent shape on ebay for ca. $100 but you are taking a chance as to what's inside the hubs and the condition of the rims.

I've not worked on/ridden Ofmega so not sure about parts, Campy stuff would be an upgrade though if that's not what's there now. Also think about the fact that building a wheelset comes into play with any replacement hubs......

minder,

I don't know what you may have done to try to fix the wobble yet, but I'm of a like mind with tonyt. I encourage you to see if the wobble is something that can be corrected. It could be something is worn out, or it could be that something came loose and just needs adjustment.

Good luck with it. Sounds like a great present for your dad.

First, about the wobble: My dad grew up in a bike shop in the PI, he felt the inside of the cups, said "really sharp, will tear up the BBs within a few hundred miles, need new hubs." I rode the bike for probably 40 miles tops, noticed the bad wobble (side to side), and I think most likely the BBs are worn down right? I could replace the bb's and be good for another couple hundred miles probably, but I'd rather not go that route.

The hubs are Ofmega 36h, with the black band and hole for putting in oil.

I have some time until his b-day (2 months), so I can afford to shop around on ebay and craigslist (just gotta get lucky. . . i saw a campy hub/mavic rim wheelset for a hundred bucks on there a couple days ago, just wasnt fast enough). So you can see why I'm hesitant to pay 100 just for the hubs on ebay (and have my not-very-experienced friend build up the wheels), when I can hold out for a good CL deal. Like I mentioned in the OP, if this bike wasn't like 98% italian i'd just slap some new wheels on there (but the rims are wolber/wheelsmiths, probly the only non-italian parts on the bike, but nice enough to keep nonetheless).

These are the hubs on ebay to which I'm referring:

OFMEGA Super Competizione hubset, 126mm- 28hole Engl:

OFMEGA MISTRAL sealed bearing hubset - 36 hole

Also I found a front axle set and rear cones on ebay for like 40 bucks, which sounds perfect, I'm gonna get a set of cone wrenches and open up the hubs tonight hopefully.

I think that's all I have for now, I'll work on some pics. Thanks for the info guys

If the hub races are in good shape & only the cones are pitted, here are suitable replacements:

$15.00 for the pair.

Also, those oil holes are perfect for those mini grease guns. I wouldn't recommend putting oil into them, your existing grease wouldn't be too happy with you.
