You have 2 grand to spend...
...what bike are you going to buy (well, 2 grand give or take).
I'm still trying to determine what new carbon roadie I need. I of course will test ride several bikes before choosing one, so for those of you out there, send me pics of what you'd buy if you had 2,000 (or perhaps 2,500, in which case you'd have to eat raman noodles for the month).
Email me directly if you'd like, or respond to this post:

for about $2400 - home build if you want Ultegra
Pedal Force QS2 frame and fork ($800) (very light, all carbon, well regarded)
Ultegra ($800)
Mavic Equipe's or Mike Garcia wheels ($350) [www.oddsandendos.com]
Saddle, seatpost, stem, bars ($450)
you could probably get the Ultegra/cockpit price ($1150) down if you shop around.

I would get an entry level CF bike. But it really depends on how much and what type of riding you'll be doing. Ride an aluminum, a steel and a CF in you price range and then decide. Personally, I wouldn't get too caught up in the groupset. Those parts relatively easly to upgrade after the fact. I would get the best frame you can get with decent components.

Personally I'd check out that Cervelo - also, My wife just dropped about $2100 on an '05 Cdale R1000 - a LOT of bike for the buck, and she finds it very comfy so far, including rides on some very bumpy roads.

I'd challenge my LBS to impress me. The proprietor knows my habits, my measurements and my preferences. I'd promise to spend the $2K there and ask him to show me two or three bikes I could test.

Naw, use it for a downpayment and closing costs on another condo property here in Florida to flip in a few months and you'll make a heck of a lot more. Doesn't look like this real estate insanity is going to end here any time soon.

I recently went through this decision process with a similar budget in mind. Chose a Specialized Roubaix Elite. Why?
- Fit me great.
- Felt great.
- Aluminum frames were too harsh for me, even w/ carbon front and rear.
- Between steel and carbon, I liked the extra zip I felt in carbon frames.
- Relaxed geometry was best for me because I have a bum elbow.
- Fits my cycling style. Longer rides. No racing.
- The components (105 / Ultegra mix) are adequate for my needs.
Certainly there were many other contenders in that price range. Ultimately the decision came down mostly to fit. (Other contenders for me were Giant OCR Comp, Trek Pilot 5.x., a Bianchi and a Jamis steel frame bike.)
Product availability was also an issue. I was really interested in seeing some Felt carbon product, but they were having problems delivering as some of the other manufacturers were.
Net: There are lots of choices in that price range. You have to first be clear about your riding needs. And don't sacrifice good fit.

You can get a Giant OCR or TCR for between $1350 and $1800, depending on model. Full carbon, Ultegra 10 speed group.

Your philosophy is all wrong. you already have "a bike".
I have 3 bikes, no money for food, and I'm selling plasma to buy tools (can't afford to have the LBS do anything), and eating the cookies they give me. THAT's priorities.
if I had $2000 of expendable income, you can bet your sweet booty it would go into a new set of wheels for my roadie, new shoes and pedals, HRM, finishing my tool collection...and maybe a track frame. I need a fixie.
