Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

spd vs. regular clipless?

I have spd which i'm going to stick with as long as i have to since it works well for commuting and i can't really find any downsides but i noticed most people have SIDI's with these little circular pedals and non recessed cleats, i don't know what this style is called but what is the benefits to this?

They're called speedplays and they have unlimited float which is why some people like them a lot.
I'm content with my ultegras.

I don't plan on changing, i was just curious if you can get spd style in higher end shoes and pedals in the future, which i have no clue when that will be because i have no idea how long riding shoes last, my shoes i commute and train in are spd mountain biking shoes...in retrospect maybe not the best choice.

Why change? For me, when making a conversion from primarily MTB to road biking, my mileage started to increase significantly (from 15-25 mi longest rides, to 30-50 and occasionally much longer). For me, anything much over ~20 mi in fixed cleats made my knees sore, really freaking sore for longer rides led me to experiement. Speedplay resolved the sore knees after long rides 100%... of course YMMV

While the Sidi's are nice shoes, I have a hard time dropping 200+ for a pair of shoes just because they are a big name.

Sidi's are compatible with SPD, Speedplay, look, time, bebop, you name it. Base plates will convert across hole patterns and sole curvatures. SPD MTB shoes are fine for commuting, easy to walk in, a fine choice.

Yah I definitely love the mtb's for commuting, im curious what do you guys mean by unlimited float? I don't really know what shoes are big names i see Pearl Izumi and SIDI alot but to me they're all the same, would a pair of those feel drastically different compared to what I'm riding?

I use ATACs and most people think i'm nuts for it, but they work for me. I also prefer a mountain shoe because i can run around in them without wearing down the cleats. SIDI Doms are effing uncomfortable though and narrow as all hell. I think i may be wearing 1/2 a size too small.

If you think Sidis are all just in the name, you are sorely mistaken.

So i'm assuming the speed play ones your foot could technically just spin in circles on them?
