Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best deal on a crankset

I'm looking to replace my stock specialized triple crank.

Requirement number one: It has to be black.

Requirment number two: Compact Double.

Requirement number three: Cheap.

Right now I'm looking at the Campagnolo Veloce crankset from PBK. $115 for the crank and $15 for the bearing cups. I'm looking to keep things under the $150 mark, total. Anyone have a better deal than the Veloce crank?

Is your current bottom brackets quare taper? If it is and is already a 110MM size then these will work...

https://www.velo-orange.com/stimcr.html

The price with a new bottom bracket would run you right at 150$

There are a lot of black compact doubles out there. I'd check sources like ebay, wisecyclebuys, aebikes, excelsports, coloradocyclist, supergo/nashbar/performance, probikekit, etc. and see where the best deals turn up for a crankset/BB.

Absolutly the best deal on a compact crankset including bottom bracket. Appears to be out of stock and only $7 over your budget and only chainrings are black, but you can't have everything.

They have black veloce CT at PBK now? I thought PBK only carried the silver CT version.

Best deal? I got a new Tiagra compact for $50. Even my r700 was under $150 with BB (but slightly used).

The best deal would probably be an Ultegra 6500 crank, but it's not black or compact. You can get them for $60 bucks though.

You can get a campy centaur 172.5 compact crank for 70-80 bucks from performance. Get a veloce bb for 40 bucks shipped and there you have a compact crank for 120 bucks. I paid 110 for mine online.

The centaur compact UT crankset is the best way to go if you don't mind spending the 150 for that and the cups. I was going to go this route but it didn't make sense for a bike that would be ridden in less than admirable conditions since I have a feeling that the UT/integrated bb's are a little more vulnerable to grit.

This might be the cheapest way to go, if you can deal with a Nashbar branded crank:

$100.00 for the crank & bb.

Cheers.
