Tires well-suited for skidding

What tires do you people feel wear well for skidding and general fixed gear debauchery? Price of the recommended tires would be nice if you know it offhand, but it's not too important if you don't.

I have a Bontrager Race Lite hard case on right now and it's lasted me longer than the Kenda Kontenders I used in the past. These tires retail for about $30, if anyone's interested.

Such a great tire. I got about 3000 miles out of the last set I had on my road bike.

It really depends on how much skidding you do and how rough the pavement is in your area. Pavement in Florida is exceptionally coarse since they use seashell as aggregate, so I don't think I could accurately guage a response for you. I also like to skid A LOT since it makes riding so much more fun. I end up going through a tire about every 8 weeks which translates to 600 miles at most.

I was highly disappointed with this tire. It wore through way too fast. Just barely lasted a month and a half. Decent amount of skidding but I wasn't doing skid contests every weekend or anything like that. My vittoria rubino slicks lasted about 5 or 6 months and costed $20. Now I'm on Armadillos and thinking pretty highly. We'll see how long they last though.

Also I hear gatorskins are the sh*t but I haven't ridden them yet.

i've had a Continental 3000 on there for a few months now. That tread is lasting forever, as it should because its not the cheapest tire. The tread ends up wearing like this \_/ where the bottom becomes flat. This probably isn't good for rolling resistance when the tire gets more worn. I haven't had any punctures either.

a dude in our area barely had his armadillo for a week before he skidded through to the bare wire bead after he slid down 5 stories of a parking garage (a dumb idea but COME ON)

do cheaper tires wear faster? i've worn down my hutchison flashes in well... i guess it's been a month but i don't really skid too much. seemed pretty quick to me.

i have a set of speediums waiting to go on, but i think i'll switch the front to the rear first so i get some skid wear out of the front tire.

conti ultra 2000 700x28
going on 5 months now. moderate skip/skid
would buy again

as soon as it fails i have a bont race lite 700x32 (with triple puncture protection-whatever that means) picked up for cheap - (anyone else run a 23 on front and 32 on rear?)
hope there's enough room on my khs flite100
anyone have experience to share on these tires?

Replacement time for tires varies and can't be compared per se. The number of skidpatches a bike's configuration has makes comparisons impossible. Of course if a person has tried different tires without changing anything else, then that's comparable.

Check: https://software.bareknucklebrigade.c...it.applet.html

BTW: Running Vittoria Rubinos and pretty satisfied.. Back tire's gonna go soon...

I alternate between Gatorskins and Armadillos. I used to swear by Armadillo's, but the last rear I had lasted about a month before they started gettin' bare. Went back to Gatorskins.
Any other good'uns out there?
Think I should get a brake.

Not necessarily--- since most expensive tires place threadcount and low weight as premiums--- not durability. The most expensive tires I own have an amazing ride, but offer terrible flat protection, and the rear squares off after a few hundred miles. A cheap Continental Sport can last a long time if well cared for... it rides like a garden hose, of course.

Since i switched to 42x18 my tires have lasted for like a week or two. I figure there's almost no skid patches at that ratio but i've been too lazy to check/ rotate the tire so I always wind up wearing through a perfectly good tire far too soon

ive tried gatorskins and armadillos.

For style: i guess i would go with the armadillos. the red walls are pretty nice.

for feel on the road: gatorskins are far superior. they feel a bit stickier if that makes since. first time i skidded in the rain on a pair of armadillos, they felt like i was skidding on those big wheels plastic tires i used to ride on when i was 3 years old. also the ride is harsher on the armadillos

durability: i switched to armadillos to see if they lasted longer that gators. ive had a gator on my back tires for about 8 months, and after pulling 4 pieces of glass out (actually not bad for philly) i wanted to try something new. after reading this post, looks like ill be going back soon.

price: i think they are the same

for quality of life for the workers: gatorskins are listed as handmade in germany. i bet those guys are getting a lot more than the people in vietnam or taiwan or wherever that the armadillos are made.

Kenda Kwests. Cheap as dirt and puncture resistant, if bit weighty and "hard".

on the back i use the $10 vredesteins you can get from nashbar.
some $7.50 vittoria pro team has been on the front for a long time...now i have a tubular front wheel and have a conti sprinter on the front...prolly gonna build a whole tub wheelset and see how long i get out of a tub...i'm getting over the whole skidding thing.

i've tried the armadillo and thought it was crap, didn't last long and rode like crap too...the gatorskins are nice, i minght put one of those back on my clincher wheel when the vredestein is worn out...

stay away from rubino techs. not sure about the pros, slicks, et al, but the techs skidded through in a matter of weeks

i rode one gatorskin rear for the entire winter (november through february) with moderate skidding, and never even skidded through it. it just got super squared off, so i switched the front to the rear and threw on my spare. 25 dollars from ben'$ cyclery and they accidentally sent me an extra one for free!
