I'm installing a new Tiagra 4600 12-30 cassette on a older 105 series 5600 hub.

I don't have the thin spacer ring that I normally use. The ring is installed before the cassette.

Is a spacer always needed?

Before FB comes along and has to repeat this little nugget again, whether you need a spacer or not is determined by whether the lockring bites down on the cassette and compresses it, or if it just bottoms out on the cassette body and leaves the cassette loose.

Yes, that's it.

I found a lock ring and tried to use it. I was unable to thread the lockring. I then installed the cassette without the spacer, and was able to install & tighten without an issue.

I had a friend once forget the spacer while installing his 105 (5600 I believe) cassette on his new Dura Ace 7850 wheels. No spacer = binding freehub. He was very confused until I set him straight. The wheel wouldn't ratchet at all, like the cassette was smashed against the wheel itself, not allowing the freehub to move independently. Strange.

Also note that the spacer fits into the recess on the rear of the innermost aluminum spider on 105/Ultegra/Dura-Ace cassettes. Since your Tiagra 4600 cassette doesn't have a spider, it shouldn't need the spacer either.

I guess the threaded portion of the lockring must've been hitting the edge of the axle bearing cup.
