Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I had to grit my teeth a couple times, spinning up some rises I usually hammer up, and being passed by guys riding at the pace I'd normally ride. Ended up with 58% of my time in Z2, with another 5% in Z1.

And somehow, still got a handful of PRs. I just can't lose for winning!

I also fell in love with the Bianchi again. New Zipp handlebars, new Fulcrum wheelset, new Centaur crankset, and running 28s instead of the 25s I've always run - it was like a whole new bike! Even flatting 2 1/2 miles from home couldn't ruin my day. Turns out that the little Lezyne Road Drive minipump can actually get a 28mm tire up to a useful pressure within a reasonable interval!

Weird thing about the new wheels, though - they're replacing the Fulcrum Racing 5s that came with the bike back in 2006. Those had THE LOUDEST freewheel! Like a swarm of angry Murder Hornets! The new wheels - also Fulcrum Racing 5s, but the 2020 model are SILENT. The bike is literally louder when pedaling than when coasting. It's eerie.
5% Z1 is darn good on a Z2 ride. Work on the rest. On a 3.5 hour Z2 ride today, I was 81%. I'm usually better, but with wind gusting and crosswinds from hell, I spent 13% above, and 6% in Z1

One hundred, seventy freakin' six times. And that's after taking 5 of the last 7 weeks off! Woof.

I looked at his ride history and he seems to be a COVID cyclist, with no rides this year prior to late April. Out of his 74 rides this year, all but 5 are laps around the same little lake that's 2.75 miles around. I ride to stay sane, but that would drive me crazy.
That is dedication. And a severe lack of imagination.

Mind you probably 95% of my rides are on exactly the same 6.2km of roads. All the time. going backwards and forwards. I call it commuting. It doesn't get boring: riding past three schools during morning drop off is enough to keep me alert.

So, like me your waiting to get wiser as you get older? Whoever said that should get flogged with an al dente spaghetti noodle. Or spaghetti squash depending on how you roll.

The Austin area bike infrastructure is dependent on you're being there or not?

So, you are saying to keep 'em separated so they can come out and play?
Sounds reasonable.

(You know how they say "A kid'll eat Ivy, too"? It's a lie. They ate literally every other green thing in the yard before they finally started eating ivy.)

We finally had to accept that it had gotten away from us. So we had the guy who redid our front yard come in to clean up the back yard. I no longer feel bad about not cleaning it up myself, because we've FILLED 1 20' x 6' debris box, and are on our way to filling a 15' x 6' one. Holy crow!

Now I have a big, blank canvas and no idea what to paint on it! Mrs. GeneJockey is thinking "edible landscape", and I'm thinking a FEW citrus trees, maybe a fig, maybe some apples. We'll see.
I'd vote for crap that doesn't grow. Preferably small rocks, which also float, by the way.

A guy I worked with would sing that at the job. He was pretty good and also did Incubus songs. He was in a band and they played at local clubs.

The discussion was life/cycling balance now, not in the '90s.

Did some upper body work today - inflating a donut tire with the floor pump. I did 3 sets of 20 psi.

Maybe I can get in 5 chinups on the first set Tuesday...
