Confusing tubular wheel
Have had this tubular wheel over a year. Unsure brand of rim or hub and can't check as covered by aero cover.
It has what appears to be threading for a freewheel on each side! Logically the freewheel would fit on the "short" side which would allow the freewheel to thread on so that it looks like a "normal" axle (struggling to describe this one) and not past end of axle. But why the threading on the non-drive side??
Short side. Threading on here would mean that the freewheel would not thread past the end of the axle
Long side. Threading a freewheel on here would mean it would stick out well past the end of axle
Unsure what I have. Has anyone any idea why it would be threaded on both sides??

1) It's not an aero cover. That's a carbon disc wheel.
2) The threading on the left side is for a track cog, so the wheel can be used for either road or track.

I doubt the makers had any thought of that wheel being a road wheel. Looks to me like it has track specific dish (close to none). You could re-space this wheel to fit a freewheel but re-dishing to keep the rim between the brake pads would be another matter.

Thank you. Was totally confused but makes sense now.
Last question is about term "carbon disk wheel".
If I keep this one, do I need a special glue or just regular Mastik One???

Wes,
It is a flip flop wheel designed for a single speed track gear on one side and a single speed freewheel on the other. It fits a track frame or any other fixte frame. Mastic is fine. I use 3M fast tack for my own installs on sew-ups. I trust our little fugitive will soon cross the border into a safe zone. Smiles, MH

Agree it's a weird wheel with a weird hub. Just assumed it was for a standard freewheel because a 6 speed screwed on (albeit a weird looking wheel then).

Single speed I get but why in God's name would someone want a single speed freewheel? The arcane things we see on bikes sometimes amazes me!

A lot of early disc wheels did not have a dish to them (Faces of the discs were flat, not conical). Offset for freewheels was accomplished mostly at the hub which were proprietary to the disc wheels. I have a very early Zzip "Predator" rear disc wheel and that's how it's set up.

It's an odd one. I don't see lockring threading, though one side does seem designed to place a cog where it should be for a track setup. The other side appears to me to be built for a multispeed freewheel. Why else would the threading be so far inbound?

Any kid who ever raced BMX bikes had more than a few of these freewheels. Here are a few pics of a freewheel and a wheel that has been kicked around the shop for the last year. Note the track cog side and the freewheel side. Smiles, MH
