1030 or 1030 plus

Now that the plus model is out, the 1030 is on sale for $400 off. Some of the new or fixed features of the plus will soon come to the 1030. Should I purchase the 1030? The only things holding me back, I think, is 1) the touchscreen on the plus is apparently much better, 2) the 1030 tech is pretty old at this point, and I suppose there will be a 1040 or whatever not too long.

I don't have a GPS computer at the moment and have been tempted to get one. At $400, the 1030 is only $40 more than the 830.

Garmin just released the 1030+. You won’t see a 1040 anytime soon.

The bigger screen of the 1030 is useful for navigation.

The 830 should be a good unit too (like the 1030).

The touchscreen on the 1030 seems fine.

1030 regular. A year old Garmin has had most of its teething problems at this point.

If you get a 1030 watch for the Halo around the screen if it is old stock with older screen. Garmin will replace under Warranty. It can show up after a few months.

$400 “off” would put a normally $599 unit at $199. I think you meant to type “$400”, or about $200 off ?.

Any links to a dealer selling at that price ?

FWIW, the Plus is very slightly faster in operation, I’ve heard it can load a navigable course a big quicker. Touch screen is supposed to be that same as the 830 and less sensitive to rain and sweat. I’ve never had issues with either. Battery life is increased from 20 to 24 hrs. The improvements to to OS are supposed to roll out to the 1030 late in the year.

My 2 years on the 1030, after replacing the first unit I received, is a rock solid unit. Maybe twice per year I need to re-configure the BT connections, takes about 5 minutes. Still get 20 hrs of use, to never crapped, LiveTrack connects about 80% of the time, everything else, including navigation, works well. It’s a good deal at $400.

The last line says for sale at $400.

(I really doubt, if the price was really $200, we know about it.)

Not true. You won't get everything with the outage but you'll get most of what you need (ride/data recording and navigation).

The phone related stuff doesn't work.

Even still, my 1030 worked just fine on a ride this morning.

For a good deal on a 1030, it should be easy enough to live without the phone stuff for a bit.

Not true. You don't need a phone/connectivity to set it up. I've set them up multiple times without it. (Garmin might lead you to use the phone but it's still not necessary). One of the benefits of the Garmin (over units like the Wahoos) is that they don't need a phone to be useful.

????

No, it’s not more work. Certainly, not a lot. You don’t need the phone.

The set-up is like 5 questions about language, sex, weight, and age. Not that hard to do with buttons.

Anyway, the 1030 The OP is talking about has a touch screen.
