Inexpensive trainer setup? (Especially "visuals")
My wife and I gave each other a budget-friendly stationary bike for C-mas. After a few spins, I think it's going to be perfect for Texas "winters" (can't really justify spending a whole lot, when I know there will be plenty of days we can get out and ride). What I'm looking for are ideas to help alleviate boredom and maybe up the comfort level a bit.
What we've got so far:
1. Replaced the stock saddle with one of our older road bike saddles.
2. A fan blowing up on the rider.
3. An HDTV on the wall opposite the bike.
4. A speed sensor (though it's proving to be more of a novelty than providing useful information).
A few extra questions:
1. It looks like Zwift requires some things (power meter/particular trainer) that we're not going to invest in. Does this mean Zwift is more or less out?
2. Does Peloton "need" the ability to easily change the resistance on the bike to simulate different levels of difficulty? (Ours can do this, but it's very rudimentary)
3. If not Zwift or Peloton, what? Just whatever is interesting enough to stave off boredom (Netflix shows, old TdF videos, etc).
I'm pretty much open to any suggestions that don't entail spending much money (unless it can somehow be used for "real" riding).

Good job swapping out the saddle. Strongly consider the same for pedals. Also something to catch sweat.
I have a cheapie mag trainer and rollers and go back forth between them. No Zwift. If I want more resistance, I just pedal harder/shift gears. Works enough for winter (where I'm just trying to maintain some semblance of form).
I go between https://thesufferfest.com/ and watching Lord of the Rings/Star Wars movies. Sufferfest never fails to completely engage. They're hard. I bought individual videos before they went to a subscription model.

If you ride clipless IRL, change the pedals too. If you have the ability to watch Youtube from the bike, GCN has some decent spin classes and CTX has some ride alongs that are, if nothing else, better to look at than the wall.
I tried television and movies and could never pay sufficient attention to both to enjoy either. Have fun riding to nowhere. But beware, if you keep up with it, you may lose your membership in the Guys Who Get Fat in The Winter club.

Use a clock or timer. Then it is kind of natural to do intervals
i.e. 3min steady, 30sec sprint, 3min out of saddle, 30 sec sprint.
Also putting the bike outside is way nicer if possible.

You have the speed sensor, that should be enough for Zwift. You can try getting it set up during the 7-day free trial they give you. I'm not sure how they can disqualify 'dumb' trainers (power curve?)
My guess is in the worst case your power estimates won't be accurate... but whatever, at least you would be getting entertainment value out of it

If you just want entertainment and motivation, Youtube is great. They have workouts for stationary bikes but my favorite is just watching racing vids. Lately it's been women cyclocross, they are more entertaining than the mens' cross races. But I have Zwift and trainer road as well so the winter here is more bearable.

I dunno, men's Zeven was pretty entertaining. Nice to see even the pros need to learn how to bunny hop. And mud, who doesn't like mud?
