Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That popped up in my feed last night - kind of cool. It reminded me of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing, which made me remember that a sequel was due. I checked, and it was published over the summer, so I have some reading material!

The RR counter sued seeking a bit over $3 million in damages due to the contractor wasting ballast material during the construction. A lawyer I partner with on large cases and I tried the case in federal court, defeated the contractor’s claim and recovered the RR’s damages and attorney’s fees, and then won the appeal in the US Court of Appeals. We collected the entire award. The locomotive number is the judgment amount. Plus three zeros. And, the second car is a ballast car.

The KCS had those made and presented to us to commemorate the win.
Cool story!

Great.

It's entirely possible we're too stupid as a species to last very long.

I saw this very sunset. Except from the hill one mile east of Brown Squirrel, not from Clingman's Dome.

Rode 40 some miles with a friend today and my back seems to be ok with it. It hurt pretty bad Saturday and I don't know what I did to it. I think I aggravated an old spine injury when I fell off the mtb in October. I have to figure out a way to prevent that pain from coming back. I was even thinking about buying a softer riding road bike.

Tomorrow some people are doing a fire road ride with two options. Some of them will be on gravel bikes and some on mountain bikes. I think I'll take my mtb and do the shorter option which avoids a road climb. It will give me a chance to check out the bikes and the scene.

I don't think the road bike is the problem here.

Hmm, would people driving south be going to GA or OH? I guess I should have asked them.

If they were in Detroit, home of the Lake Erie Lions, it could be either.

The original injury occurred around 1982 when I was knocked off of my motorcycle. Since then it has periodically given me grief and riding a super stiff road bike on crappy roads has been a source of that grief.
The latest episode, however, was the worst I can recall and I was speculating that when I hit the ground several weeks back it may have been a contributing factor. It has seemed more touchy since then.

Say goodbye to the Pink Elephant Car Wash sign on Denny Way.
