I'm pretty sure I saw evidence that summer is really over.....
It wasn't much snow... probably not even an inch.
It was warm enough for it to compact into ice when a car or bike ran over it, so it made for some interesting tests of bike handling! Time to swap out the slick tires for the winter tires with deep tread.

Sometimes things happen too fast for a picture. Was riding an area called Briones today when I caught a glimpse of a large heron on the side of the trail. As I passed, it plucked a huge gopher out of the ground. I've seen this before. In this picture you can see the heron with a large lump in its throat. He plucked a rat off the nearby rocks.

Raven. I've seen them in Colorado and in Canada but I don't think I've ever seen one in Virginia. Today on the High Bridge Trail, in the middle of the High Bridge.

When I was a teenager feeding the chickens. Dump the grain in the feed tray and often rats would run out.
One day the (very large mouse or teenage size rat?) it runs to the chicken and she swallowed it whole. Pointed her beak up and looked like she waa gagging as the rodent slid down. I was blown away.

Our industrial airport sits in the middle of 3 military air stations so it’s not unusual to see military aircraft doing touch & go landings and in the discussion of unique sounds, the Osprey makes a loud vibrating roar like no other. It’s cool to see them just hover like a bee maybe 50 ft up over the runway.
Today was a beautiful day in NC, especially considering what we have coming. Snow Hill / Greene Co Tuscarora Indian burial ground monument on today’s ride
All these are spellings of the tribal name in several languages

Saw a peregrine falcon yesterday. The day before that, a red-tailed hawk on the ground that I came upon while hiking up a hill. Startled, the hawk took off right in front of me then perched in a low tree branch, peering down on either side trying to find the lunch I interrupted.
