Help buying new tires

This threat pobably belongs in the mechanics forum but my classic/vintage 1987 Schwinn Super Sport with Mavic MA 40 wheelset needs new tires. Now it has 23 mm tires on there now. My question is, should I stcik with 23 mm wide tires or can I safely mount 25 mm tires on those very nice vintage rims? Doc Cannondale, you helped me restore this bike and I would love to hear your advise.

Great wheelset!

Great old school road bike

You could easily go up to 28's with MA40's. I have a '73 Schwinn Voyageur with 27" MA40's and I run 1 1/4 Pasela's without any problems. That's equivalent to 32mm. Of course, the real question may be how much clearance does your frame and brake calipers have for bigger tires.

Go with Conti GP 5000 S in 25.
You will NOT regret it.

Do you have a bead jack? My single MA40 requires one wth any new tire I attempt to mount the first time. Otherwise I really like those rims

I agree with this. I have the preceding tire, and it's impressive, and I hear the GP 5000 is even impressiver.

I have no idea what a bead jack is! I have plastic tire levers, that's about the only equipment I have ever used with my wheels.

I would go with the widest tires that will fit beneath the brake bridges and between the stays (unless you weigh less than 100 lbs). I would guess that you could get 28s on there, though don't quote me on that. I ran 28s on my MA40s for years.

I raced for three years on 45mm Panaracer "Smoke" knobbies using MA40 rims, shown here immediately before almost running over a brave photographer (was carrying some speed at this corner).
Mounting the tires was aided by my use of the ultra-thin ROX rim tape, so I carried just one tire iron in my pack.

Kool Stop International - High Performance Bicycle Brake Pads Since 1977

I am going to give the Michelin 700Cx28 folder one more shot on my Campag. Omega rim with a tire jack. There is now way in hell I can get even the first bead over the edge of the rim.

I had Conti Grand Prix tires in 23mm on my De Rosa. I went up to 25mm Vittoiria Rubinos. Good upgrade, although I sometime wish I had gone to 28mm.
