You don't indicate which part of Australia. Can you run? Do you swim at beaches? Do you hike overnight? Do you drink and if so how much? And do you diet and know what to avoid on holidays?

Why won't you have your bicycle over here? You can bring it on the plane!
Where in Australia ... it's a big place.

I wouldn't worry about a month unless you ride in competitions. Assuming you don't sit in a hotel room all day and just eat, you should be okay.
While true you could take your bike, I'd think someone over there rents. Or just buy a cheap bike from what ever their cheapo discount store is there. Then give it away or trash it.

The other significant factor that needs to be considered is the actually road safety in whichever destination is chosen.
Sadly, the road accident death toll in two states at least is almost double what it was to the same time last year, including some cyclists, and that has let to major conferences to find ways to overcome the number that is similar to that recorded in the 1970s.
The biggest capital city, Sydney, is a place where I virtually refuse to cycle. Even in Hobart which is capital of my home state, people we know are dropping out of cycling because the road driver attitude is making it unsafe -- this is in contrast to the northern part of the island state.

I’m jealous I want to hang out in Australia for a month too. That darn United 787 Houston to Sydney flies over my house. In the morning returning to Houston than again right at nightfall heading to Sydney. Maybe you could just rent a bike and cruise around Australia. I would visit AC/DC lane in Melbourne if you like hard rock. I know AC/DC has a rabid fan base in Texas. One day I will visit Australia and New Zealand. I’m sure Machka and Rowan have a wealth of information since they live there. My other hobby is surf fishing and I have watched plenty of You Tube videos on Australian surf fishing. Ok I’m rambling on

Well, it is nearly winter here, and Canberra is cold, so a gym might be an option.
Are your parents in Canberra?

Don't know about hiring bikes in Canberra, but it was a city that put cycling paths off the roads and connected various suburban areas with them before just about any other city in Australia. There's also the big lake there. Things may have changed since the last time I was there, so it might be worth checking out both hire and path riding.
The issue with gyms throughout Australia is that they want you to be a member before you get to use them. There, however, may be opportunities to pick up the use of one without having to become a member.
Ironically, it might be advisable to see what is available at the university -- if it is anything like the one we have in Hobart, it costs little for the public to turn up to its gym as public (be aware that Machka, my wife, is a student there, but I can use it for a low general public price without them knowing that we are together). I've never been to the uni in Canberra, so I might not have the thoughts there wrong, but it might be worth turning up. Plus Canberra is headquarters of various national training organisations, too.
The lake itself has a quite flat surround and has some interesting things of various sorts on the way around the tracks. It therefore would be a good opportunity for jogging at least.

Also, investigate the surround mountain parks. Again maybe some thought about hiring an MTB, and despite the really bad fires several years ago, there is a chance to find some challenges either bike riding or walking/jogging. I think...

Because the gravity is do weak there, going uphill won't be of much benefit, but the thin atmosphere means even walking across the room will be strenuous exercise.

I was in the Philippines for a month without a bike. Pretty hard to find a used bike there that would fit someone 6'3". So i went to the gym 3 to 4 times a week spending half the time on a stationary bike and half the time doing weight training. Not much different from my winter rkutine at home. Worked out fine. I dont compete, so im probably not as sensitive to missing a few days. But i do feel i retained my fitness well enough.
