Vintage hybrids? Maybe not so bad after all...

Most Shimano 9 speed and below will work with either shifters, with some exceptions. Some have different pulls. I believe the shifters are 9x3 Tiagra. I used to know all of the particulars, but have gotten out of the building/modding game. I pretty much stopped in late 2017 and have been actively forgetting everything since then.

WV is not flat..
I think this belongs here. Just picked it up and haven't had a chanced to clean and rebuild everything, but it's coming. Rides great the way it is. 1993 Miyata Triple Cross.

Hybrid sizing
I see all these hybrid drop bar conversions and I’ve been considering one myself. Question: how do you determine what size to be going with for the conversion? I’ve heard a lot about sizing down because of reach issues. So, I typically ride a 56,57cm road bike and 19” mtb, what should I be looking for in a hybrid that I want to put drops on?

I have a very similar specimen.
I have had a hankering to find a hybrid since late last year, came close a few times but never quite got there, but I was browsing CL today like you do and boom a $40 bike in this market! wait its a hybrid and gasp its my size!! Turns out it a Univega Via Montega from maybe 1993 based on the Shimano 400 CX group. It's a one owner and the nice (tall) lady who owned it had moved onto a flat bar road bike but had ridden and liked the bike for 20 years. It has a balky front shifter, the rear works but has no gear indicator anymore and I noticed as I loaded it up that its missing a rear spoke. BUT its a one owner garage stored bike that was well maintained and had a tune up 4 years ago. I am pretty pleased for $40. Not sure what I am going to do with it but pleased.. Ok enough rambling here are the pics

Well my Hybrid is now long gone, built up ridden and sold as so often happens and I have just recently moved to Spokane but I hope to get back to Seattle for visits and would love to do a party pace chill ride.

Oh dang! I totally misread the timestamp on that post. I thought it was from August '21. Definitely need to plan a larger PNW get together once things are a little more normal.

Kind of resurrecting an older thread but I wanted to chime in and post a few pics of my vintage hybrid, a 1995 Trek Multitrack 7900:
Made in USA!
I picked this one up last September and have been thoroughly enjoying it since! It was in pristine condition, almost like the PO bought it and then hung it up in the garage for 26 years. The ride is… sublime. It sounds different than my steel or aluminum frame bikes, and it certainly feels fast (whether or not it is actually faster is debatable). This is my go to for a quick hour or two ride just to get my heart pumping. Maybe I’ll throw some knobbies on and hit some light trails some day - there’s certainly clearance for them:
The previous two pictures show Schwalbe 700 x 40c but currently it’s running Specialized Nimbus Sports labeled as 45, with plenty of clearance…
Typically, in my area, hybrids fly under the radar and so can be had for good prices. In the last few years I’ve bought two Trek hybrids for less than $25 each, and they were both in nice condition.

That carbon multi-track is wild! I had no idea they made a carbon version. I've got a badly neglected '95 Trek 720 that I'm hoping to revive in the next few weeks, probably as some sort of drop-bar mutt as I just prefer drops. I'm really curious to see how it rides.

I suppose this Hybrid replaces my recently sold '85 Trek 620, and my '91 Alpina Team, and my '73 Grand Sports. It looks huge but ST and TT hit my road bike sweet spot and the head tube is not silly MTB short which is cool I've only just begun playing with it and noticed that the forks are quite flexy. Most/all of the other hybrids have forks that look similar to my Newly acquired '91 Trek Multitrack 750--rather skinny and not at all like a early 90s MTB. I would have expected more beef.

That Carbon Trek Mountain Bike is very rare, and desirable. Wall art.

Thanks for an interesting thread. Here's a Koga Miyata Terraliner (2001) found locally, requiring some work after years of neglect.
In the Koga Miyata brochure of that year, it is filed under the 'Sporthybride' section. Not sure about this, as the weight of the frameset would suggest touring, as perhaps does the parallel 71-degree geometry.
With comprehensive 3 x 8 Deore gearing, added dynamo lighting plus fenders, it's steady, comfortable, and versatile enough both on & off-road.

Yeah baby. Found one again, the last old hybrid I found was about 2017-2018. This one popped up yesterday, was $100, and then got a Gretsch solid body guitar, plus got off of work 3.5 half hours early. An H300 with seemingly LOTS of room for fenders. If Velo Orange is still around, it might be time to build retro styled but modern component "touring" type bike. hammered fenders tan wrap and saddle, silver racks front and rear, etc....
Yes, that is a 26 inch front wheel. At least the forks weren't bent. ;-). CAD-1!!!!

I bought this Takara at Goodwill for $5 to get the crankset for another bike, then used some stuff from the parts bin to make a hybrid. Technically, it was a road bike first, but the frame was too small for me, so the upright bars make more sense. After a short test ride, it looks promising.
