Installing Wald 867 handlebar On Trek 620
I picked up this 1984 Trek 620 (19”) for my wife. Still need to get the wheels figured out, it’s got a set of 700c road wheels on right now.
We went on a short 16 mile ride and now I Need to change the original drop bars. Would like to convert this Trek 620 into more of a commuter style upright rider. I have some Wald 867 Touring handlebars that are 25.4 clamp and accept the Suntour bar end shifters.
What style stem works well on this frame? The original SR Custom stem seams too low for these 867 bars?
I’ll also need new brakes/cables, a suspension saddle and a wooden crate.

I think you'd be better off building around a more modern hardtail MTB or a 26" wheeled tourer.

Hi,
I am a former store owner and have quite a bit of experience with a similar model, I actually like the wald 8095 and have set them up with grip shift and have also done bar-cons. First of all I have to say that if that is your wife's preferred seat height, that the bike is entirely too big. As far as the handlebars go, because the way that they sweep back, instead of forward, You will need to use a longer stem, definitely not higher, the handlebars are going to make it plenty high.

Modern bikes might be better but I’m sticking to this older Trek frame as I’ve seen them converted before.
Not right seat height.. picture taken when I first got it before any adjustments.
This stem is 80mm long. What length should I look for? 110, 120,130, 140mm ? Or is it just a “what ever works” kind of thing. Any help appreciated.

If you become infuriated from reading forum posts, then don't read them! Find something else to do besides criticizing those who are simply trying to help. As for "unhelpful", that's a matter of opinion, and yours carries no more weight than mine. It’s okay, any answer is helpful than none...
I hadn’t thought about a longer stem, that makes sence. I’ll try a 120mm stem in the 25.4 clamp and see how that works out. It’s a start, thanks.

I do not know if this will help: I am 5-6" and after a lot of experimenting I likes having the handlebar center to the nose of the saddle about 20- 20.6" So, I do not know what length stem will get to that measurement and don't know your height, or if you will like that reach.

they managed.. see one of the many drop to straight bar conversion threads , you do need different levers cables and new housing , and likely relocating the shifters .. rather than Wald , pony up the $ for Nitto,
they bore out the ends of their aluminum bars to take bar end shifters ..,.
their other 'albatross bar' is Chromoly.. a much thinner wall tubing, so a Bar end shifter pod slips in the ends..
Wald Uses a thicker wall tubing, so bar end shifters don't fit ... ID too small.

I didn’t order these old Wald 867 bars. I just stumbled across these for $1 locally, just couldn’t walk away at that price. I have no idea what bike these came off originally.
My Suntour Bar-end shifters I have did fit without any struggle on the old Wald 867’s. I was able to tighten them up snug with the Allen wrench.
Just found an SR 120mm stem on eBay for not that much including shipping. I’ll post pics once it arrives and I have it installed.
I’m not trying to be a tight wad, just didn’t want to order the high end stuff not knowing what all is needed to make this conversion work. Had I found the information on converting same model frame I have with Higher end bars/stem. I’d just order it and be done. Would be so much easier that way.

This 120mm SR stem worked out. Just need to wrap the grip area.

Looks good. Fortunately, if the stem is too long, it's fairly easy to swap them out with your setup before your wrap the bars.

Really like those bars on that bike. I am changing the drop bars on my 85 Miyata 1000 to cruiser bars as I like the wider width. Won't look as sweet as your wife's bike, but will be fun to experiment with.
